Planning Is Key
To Successful
Vacation Trip
ATLANTA — Georgia residents
are advised that careful planning
is the key to a successful vaca
tion.
Noting that Governor Ernest
Vandiver has proclaimed this
coming Sunday as the start of
Vacationing Planning Week, W
Henry Maddox, chairman of the
Petroleum Council of Georgia
said:
“In designating May 21-27 as
Vacation Planning Week, the
Governor called attention to the
important role played by the
tourist trade in the state’s eco
nomy. Many thousands of state
residents depend on tourism as
the source of their livelihood, as
indicated by the fact that tourism
in Georgia is a $425 million a
year business.

Both resident and out-of-state
travelers can benefit from the
rest, pleasure and recreation to
be gained from a vacation in
Georgia, he said. “The best way
to insure these benefits is through
systematic preparation,” Maddox
said. The state observance is part
of a national campaign urging
vacationers to avoid hectic, last
minute vacation planning.
Gasoline service stations
throughout the state are prepar
ed to supply free road maps, and
to ready automobiles for summer
driving, he notes. “The numerous
points of interest in Georgia
should attract many out-of-state
travelers who can be expeced to
aid our economy while rewarding
themselves with an enjoyable va
cation,” he said.

New Activity in
Housing Loans
The farm housing loan program
of the Farmers Home Adminis
tration is picking up new momen
tum, not only through the Nation,
but in Brantley, Pierce and Ware
Counties.
That’s the word from Seth M.
Kellam, County Supervisor in
charge of the agency’s lending
program here. He said this re
newed farm housing loan activity
follows the early February an
nouncement that an additional
SSO million is now available to
the Farmers Home Administra
tion for its 4 percent loan to farm
owners to build or repair farm
houses and essential farm build
ings. Such a loan may extend
over a 33-year period.
The new loan money broke up
a log-jam of applications that
were being held because funds
had been exhausted. Nationwide,
loans are now being processed at
the rate of about $5 million a
month but indications point to a
probable doubling of that pace.
In this area Mr. Kellam said he
looks for the main demand to
continue to be for loans for new
construction, although farm own
ers may need the credit to repair
or remodel dwellings, put in
modern kitchens, install pressure
water supply systems, central
heating, bathrooms, and other
conveniences. Other uses include
building, repairing, or moderniz
ing barns, dairy and poultry faci
lities, and other farm service
buildings. Farm owners find
much of this type of construction
necessary to cope with changing
agricultural conditions.
Mr. Kellam pointed out that by
products of this loan program in
clude employment of carpenters
and other skilled and unskilled
labor, and increased business for
concerns that handle building
.materials and equipment items.
Eligible to borrow are owners
of farms that annually will pro
duce at least S4OO worth of com
modities for sale or home use
based on 1944 prices, but who
cannot be adequately financed
through other sources.
Area Code' Use
Can Speed Long
Distance Calls
Want a quicker way to place
long distance calls?
A number known as an “area
code” can speed your long dis
tance calls now, according to
W. B. Smith, Southern Bell man
ager.
The area code is the three-digit
number identifying certain cal
ling areas in the U. S. and Can
ade. When the telephone company
designed a system to enable tele
phone users to dial their own
long distance calls, no two tele
phone numbers could be the same
if the new system was to work,
according to Mr. Smith.
To avoid duplication of tele
phone numbers, the area code
plan was devised, he said. The
country was divided into areas
and each area given a code.
The combination of the code
and the subscriber’s telephone
number makes each telephone
number different.
“Most telephone users have
learned their calls go through
faster if they give the operator

the out-of-town number because
it eliminates a separate call to
Information in the other city,”
Mr. Smith said. “Area codes, if
known and also given to the oper
ator, will further speed up the
call,” he said.
The telephone manager suggest
ed that telephone us-
ers follow this procedure in plac
ing long distance calls: if the
area code for the party you are
calling is different from your
own area code, give it to the
operator, along with the tele
phone number. You’ll save time.
He also suggested that area
codes for out-of-town numbers be
kept near the phone. “And, give
your area code to out-of-town
callers so they can reach you
faster next time,” he said.
