Stockholders of
Stabilization
Group to Meet
Flue-cured tobacco growers
from Florida through Virginia
will be attending Stabilization’s
15th Annual Stockholders Meet
ing. The meeting will be held on
June 30th, in Raleigh, N. C., at
the Sir Walter Hotel, beginning
at 10 A. M.
L. T. Weeks, General Manager,
and Dorsey Matthews, Director
from District No. 2 (Georgia), an
nounced that Horace D. Godfrey,
Administrator, Commodity Stabi
lization Service, U. S. Department
of Agriculture, Washington, D. C.,
will be the principal speaker.
Godfrey, a native of North Caro
lina, heads USDA’s largest agency
and is also Executive Vice-Presi
dent of Commodity Credit Cor
poration. Before assuming his
present responsibilities, he was
Administrative Officer of the
Agricultural Stabilization and
Conservation programs in North
Carolina.
Other highlights of the pro
gram will be the annual reports
of General Manager Weeks and
President Carl T. Hicks.
During the business session,
there will be a confirmation of
directors who were elected at the
district meetings earlier this year.
Directors elected were: James R.
Pate, District 4 (Border Belt);
W. A. Allen, District 6 (Eastern
Belt); and W. H. Knight, District
9 (Old Belt of N. C.). All were
elected for 3-year terms.
The Trend Toward
Compact Cars
The latest registration figures
on new cars for Georgia show
that compact cars have made fur
ther inroads in total registrations.
Compacts through April of this
year accounted for nearly 40 per
cent of all new car registrations
in this state.
Well, that’s no great surprise,
particularly to drivers, for the so
called economy models are a
pretty common sight. Remember
back in 1955 when crowds gath
ered about the little oddities?
Then the petroleum industry
cautioned the gasoline tax collec
tors to be careful, lest they kill
ed the goose that laid the gold
en egg. The industry contended
that as gasoline taxes went up,
the sale of compacts would go
up, thus cutting gasoline con
sumption and obviously gasoline
tax revenues.
But the tax takers called this
warning a scare technique which
had no foundation!
The latest registration figures
rather prove the petroleum in
dustry’s thesis. Gasoline consump
tion is suffering and gasoline
tax revenues are suffering. Indi
cations are that the point of di
minishing return is in the not-too
distant future.
The average annual increase in
Georgia gasoline tax revenues for
the last ten years has been $3.4
million. For the current fiscal
year, the increase is so far only
one million, with only two
months to be counted!
Let us be prepared. Listen for
the squawks from the tax takers
when that point of diminishing
returns turns up! Listen, but
don't heed — instead let them
listen now. Let the motorist
sound off against the unfair gaso
line taxes, now more than 50
percent.
For as the trend toward com
pact cars continues to grow, so
will the trend in tax revenues
grow’ more compact!
The three major causes of
forest fires are debris burning,
smokers and incendiary, accord
ing to G. D. Walker, Extension
forester.
