Talmadge Urges
Overseas Sales
Os U. S Peanuts
ATLANTA Georgia’s U. S.
Sen. Herman E. Talmadge has
called on Secretary of Agriculture
Orville L. Freeman to add pea
nuts and peanut products to the
list of surplus agricultural
commodities available for sale
overseas under Public Law 480,
which subsides such sales.
Pointing out that “peanuts are
the only basic farm commodity
subject to price supports and a
creage controls which is not be
ing offered for purchase and
consumption abroad” under the
provisions of this law, the sena
tor in a letter to the secretary
said:
“It is my firm opinion that
such a step not only would be
of great benefit to the peanut
growers of the U. S. but also
would serve to give the Public
Law 480 program a broader base
of appeal throughout the world.”
FOREST INDUSTRY
The total raw value of forest
products sold by Georgia’s tim
berland owners is approximately
$135 million annually, and the
forest industry is valued at S7OO
million annually, according to
Extension Forester C. Dorsey
Dyer of the University of Georgia
College of Agriculture.
