TO GEORGIA COUNTIES
Fayette
County
NAMED FOR
MARQUIS DE
LAFAYETTE
Formed from Creek Indian lands ‘
in 1821, Fayette became the 49th
county to fly the Georgia flag. Both Fayette County and its
county seat, Fayetteville, were named in honor of the Marquis
de Lafayette, the French nobleman who served as one of
Washington’s chief lieutenants in the Revolutionary War. Origi
nally a larger county which included parts of Clayton and old
Campbell County lands, Fayette now holds 139 tn position in
size. This northwest central Georgia county has a population of
7,900. Many of its residents enjoy a healthy income from local
farms and woodlands, while others commute to nearby Atlanta
to jobs in a wide variety of industries. Os considerable interest
to tourists is the historic Fayette Court House, an ornate brick
building which ranks among the oldest judicial halls in the
state. Other towns in Fayette County include Tyrone, Woolsey
and Brooks.
In Georgia counties where the sale of beer and ale is legal,
the United States Brewers Association works constantly to as
sure their sale under pleasant, orderly conditions. Believing
that strict law enforcement serves the best interest of the
people of Georgia, the Association stresses close cooperation
with the Armed Forces, law enforcement and governing officials.

Mrs. Blitch Sends
Shelter Plans to
Her Constituents
Eighth District Representative
Iris Blitch wants to keep her con
stituents alive in the event of an
atomic war, and is taking the ini
tial step by furnishing construc
tion plans for fallout shelters.
During the past two weeks she
has distributed over 25 thousand
Civil Defense booklets containing
detailed building plans for five
basic fallout shelters.
Civil Defense officials said that
Rep. Blitch was among the first
Members of Congress to launch a
massive distribution program of
“The Family Fallout Shelter.”
Residents of the Eighth Congres
sional District need only to write
to Rep. Blitch in Washington for
copies of the valuable publica
tion.
Reason for this action was ex
plained simply enough by Rep.
Blitch: “The world situation
makes us cognizant of the fact
that we must be prepared.”
An introduction to the booklet
states: “The Federal Government
has a shelter policy based on the
knowledge that most of those be
yond the range of atomic blasts
and heat will survive if they have
adequate protection from fallout.
But protection must be provided
before, not after, the sirens
sound.
Rep. Blitch even revealed that
—pending present research act
ion — she expects to introduce
a bill in Congress to provide a
taxpayer deduction for the cost
of constructing a fallout shelter.
She discussed this plan on Tues
day with President Kennedy
during a reception at the White
House, and found him to be “very
interested” in the idea.

new carton, to be the same size

coated one-half gallon container,
reportedly has a stronger body

easier to hold and pour. They
will also eliminate the problem
of objectionable flakes of wax in
