FOOD COSTS
Recent surveys show that of
every S2O spent for groceries in
the U. S., $1.50 to $2.00 is for
packaging. Many other services,
such as processing and partial
preparation, may also be included
in the food bill, according to Dr.
Mary Gibbs, Extension consumer
marketing specialist.
BURNING WOODLANDS
Some woodlands can be burned ,
to reduce the danger from wild
fire, but it is important that such
burning be done by experienced
and qualified personnel, says C.
Dorsey Dyer, head of the Exten
sion forestry department, Univer
sity of Georgia College of Agri
culture. I

Highway Patrol
Sees 33 Holiday
Traffic Deaths
ATLANTA — Thirty-three per
sons are marked for death in
Georgia traffic accidents during
the Christmas-New Year holiday
period.
That’s the grim prediction of
the Georgia Department of Pub
lic Safety for the gay holiday
periods extending from 6 P. M.
Friday, Dec. 22, through midnight,
Dec. 25, and for the same hours
from Friday, Dec. 29, through
Jan. 1. Each holiday period cov-
ers 78 hours.
I “It is our prayful hope this
prediction will turn out to be
(Wrong,” declared Col. H. Lowell
i Conner, state public safety di
rector. “We’ll be out at top
strength doing all within our
power to hold accidents and fa
:talities to a minimum, but the
'final count will be determined
by the driving public, itself.
“The useless killing of human
beings is not a fitting way to ob
serve the anniversary of the
birth of Christ. We implore all
drivers to prove our prediction
entirely too high by applying the
Golden Rule to driving, thereby
eliminating needless slaughter on
our highways and streets. Let’s
keep Christmas in our driving.”
The State Patrol’s prediction
is based on past experience, pre
sent trends and the fact that
more motor vehicles are travel
ing more miles over Georgia
roads than ever before. It envi
sions 21 persons losing their lives
during the Christmas holiday per
iod and another 12 during the
New Year period.
Last year 14 traffic deaths were
recorded on Christmas Eve and
eight on Christmas Day. There
were only four traffic fatalities
reported during the New Year
holiday span, one of the lowest
on record in Georgia.
From now through Jan. 1 all
leaves and passes have been can
celled in the Safety Department
for the two big holiday week
ends and every available man,
including headquarters personnel
and GBI agents, will be on active
duty for the around-the-clock en
forcement operation.
State troopers will be patrol
ling all Georgia roads using
every possible device and method,
including radar, electronic speed
timers, roadblocks and airborne
spotters, in an effort to maintain
safety.
In calling on the motoring pub
lic, as well as on local and county
law enforcement officers, the
press, radio and TV stations and
other safety-minded groups, for
full cooperation in the safety
campaign, Col. Conner said:
“Let’s all do our level best to
make this Christmas-New Year
holiday season the safest Georgia
has ever known.”
