The new pipeline, if Federal
Power Commission grants the
certificate, will be constructed
from a point'off the south main
line approximately thirty miles
northeast of Macon along a gen
erally direct route to serve the
intervening territory between that
point and Brunswick, Georgia;
thence south along the coast to
St. Marys, Georgia and possibly
into Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Service will be available to the
intervening communities at the
pipeline.
Mr. Rather stated further that
the economic feasibility of the
line would be dependent upon
obtaining satisfactory sales con
tracts with the major industrial
customers in the area and prompt
action would be taken to complete
such contracts in order to ex
pedite the project.
It is expected that the applica
tion for the certificate will be
filed with the Federal Power
Commission not later than June
29, 1962 provided that the inter
ested parties will concur in the
Company’s program at an early
date and that appropriate prece
dent agreements with the indus
trial customers referred to, At
lanta Gas Light Company and
other corporate or municipal
purchasers are completed.
This new pipeline project pro
posed by Southern Natural Gas
Company is comparable to the
one originally proposed by the
Georgia Coastal Natural Gas
Corporation for which the Com
mission granted a Certificate of
Public Convenience and Necessity
in early 1959. The cities that ex
pect to receive natural gas ser
vice are as follows: Wrightsville,
Swainsboro, Soperton, Vidalia,
Mount Vernon, Glenwood, Alamo,
Mcßae, Helena, Reidsville, Bax
ley, Hazelhurst, Alma, Glenn
ville, Hinesville, Ludowici, Sere
ven, Offerman, Patterson, Black
shear, Waycross, Brunswick,
Darien, Waverly, Woodbine,
Kingsland and St. Marys. Some

ed out on a mutually satisfactory

Vice-Chairman Allen Chappell
and Commissioners William Kim
brough, Walter L. McDonald, and
Ben T. Wiggins, along with Chair
man Pilcher, have been diligent
ly seeking to bring natural gas
to this area of Georgia.
STATEMENT BY W. L. LEE,
PRESIDENT, ATLANTA GAS
LIGHT COMPANY:
The plan proposed by Southern
Natural Gas Company would sup
ply Atlanta Gas Light Company
with gas for its service areas in
southeast Georgia to a point near
Jesup and near Brunswick instead
of in the Savannah area as had
been previously proposed.
We would still construct lateral
lines and distribution systems to
serve the cities in this area with
which we now hold franchises;
Brunswick, Waycross, Blackshear,
Screven, Hinesville, Woodbine,
Kingsland, and St. Marys.
We are also willing to build
laterals to and distribution sys
tems in other cities located near
enough to the pipeline to be eco
nomically feasible. We are now
engaged in negotiations with
more than a dozen cities to obtain
franchises to serve them.
The .major advantage of this
new Southern Natural proposal is
that the investment per customer
is greatly reduced and would
thereby result in lower rates.
Southern Natural has indicated
that it can build the main pipe
line within approximately six
months after they obtain a cer
tificate from the Federal Power
Commission. Atlanta Gas Light
plans to begin construction of the
laterals and distribution systems
for the cities it will serve simul
taneously with the beginning of
Southern Natural’s construction.
In the event this proposal
should not get underway by June
29, Atlanta Gas Light Company
will go forward with its original
project.
We congratulate the Georgia
Public Service Commission for its
part in working out the proposal
made by Southern Natural which
will result in the long range
benefit to the citizens of south
east Georgia.

read food labels
Reading labels on food contain
ers is a good investment of time,
says Dr. Mary Gibbs, Extension
consumer marketing specialist.
In accordance with law, the label
must tell the name of the pro
duct, net weight or liquid meas
ure, name and address of the
packer or distributor and the list
of ingredients where two or
more foods go into an unstand
ardized product.
FARROWING FACILITIES
The modern swine operation
needs some type of farrowing
facility where conditions can be
controlled. For example, the
house should be draft free dur
ing winter months and have
plenty of ventilation during
summer months, says J. A.
Christian, Extension animal hus
bandman, University of Georgia
College of Agriculture.
