Efficient Pecan
Production Is Key
To Making Profit
A complete cultural, disease
control and insect control pro
gram can make pecan production
profitable even in years of low
prices, the experience of a Ware
County pecan producer show.
Weaver Cauley’s 20 acres of
pecans have been under good
fertilization for the past 20 years.
They have good spacing and have
been producing well each year,
■according to County Agent Tom
Boland.
By initiating a disease and
insect program last year, Mr.
Cauley raised the yield in this
grove greatly, thereby giving him
a profit despite lower prices than
the year before, the county agent
said.

For example, in 1960-61 Mr.
Cauley sold a total of 8,722
pounds of pecans from this 20
acres for a total return of $2,791.
This was at an average price of
32 cents.
In 1961-62 he not only applied
fertilizer and zinc to the trees,
but added an insect and disease
control program according to
Extension recommendations. He
sprayed 10 times with Cyprex for
scab and malathion for insects.
This year he sold 50,000 pounds
from the same 20 acres. Although
the average price he received was
only 16 cents, the nuts sold for a
total of SB,OOO.
The costs can be broken down
as follows: $2,937 for fertilizer,
zinc sulfate, spray chemical; SSOO
labor for spraying and $1,484 for
labor to gather the 50,000 pound
crop.
