Lockjaw
By The Medical Association
of Georgia
Tetanus — or lockjaw as it is
commonly called — is still fatal
to about half of the people who
contract the disease and an aver
age of 450 cases occur in the
United States each year.
This is so even though lock
jaw is a preventable disease. The
tetanus toxoid is one of medi
cine's most effective immuniz
ing agents. It is usually given in
a series of three shots. The ini
tial series is followed by booster
shots and another booster is giv
en at the time of exposure. Taken
this way, the toxiod gives almost
100 per cent immunity.
The tetanus germ lives and
multiplies primarily in the intes
tinal tract of animals. It can form
spores, a form of bacterial life
I that withstands dryness and lack
of food for long periods. It
doesn’t grow in the presence of
air, but it may be in the air as
well as in the soil, particularly
around farms and gardens.
A puncture wound, such as
[caused by a gunshot, nail, or an
animal bite is the kind of acci
dent most likely to cause tetanus.
Such wounds carry the tetanus
germs deep into the body away
from air. They usually bleed lit
tle so there is little chance of the
germs being washed out. The
germs are most likely to be on
objects subject to contamination
with animal excreta. That’s why
they are most abundant in farm
yards or in fertilized fields, vege
table gardens or flower beds.
When a person who hasn’t had
tetanus toxoid is exposed to the
disease, he is given tetanus anti
serum. This is temporarily ef
fective but it has disadvantages.
Given in the large amounts some
times needed or in smaller re
peated doses it often causes an
allergy. The allergy is trouble
some, frequently incapacitating
and sometimes fatal.

Approximately 8% of the electricity consumed each year
in the United States is distributed by electric co-ops to
their Member-Owners . . .
We’re a small part
of the electric pie
Electric co-ops serve over 4% million
Owners in the United States. Like other elect
power distributing systems, they buy s °me elec
tricity from federal and other public power projects
—about 46% in the case of co-ops. About 39 /o is
bought from independent companies with power
generating facilities. There are several co-ops
which generate electric power and this accounts
for another 15% of the total.
Electric cooperatives operate to improve the lives
of people . . . they are a strong and effective tool
in raising the standard of living of a large segmen
of the population.
Serving an average of less than 4 consumers per
mile of line, as compared to about 40 per mile in
the cities, the electric co-op — although a small par
of the electric utility industry — is an effective
“yardstick” whereby comparisons of the costs ox
electric power distribution can be made. This is a
sort of “competition” by example, and has obvious
benefits for the users of electricity in cities too.
