Safe at Home?
Hardly, Health
Specialist Says
How safe is your home?
Home is generally thought of
as a safe place, but figures on
accidents indicate that this feel
ing may be a false sense of se
curity. In the United States, one
person dies every 16 minutes as
a result of a home accident. One
person is permanently disabled
every four minutes and someone
is temporarily disabled every
seven seconds by other home ac
cidents.
Home accidents are caused by
both environmental and human
factors, says Miss Lucile Higgin
botham, head of the Extension
health department, University of
Georgia College of Agriculture.
Among major factors causing
home accidents, she says, are im
proper use and maintenance of
equipment, careless housekeeping,
physical impairment, emotional
instability, haste, fatigue and poor
judgement.
Recent studies show that the
leading cause of fatal home ac
cidents are burns, explosions,
falls, mechanical suffocation,
firearms and poisons. The lead
ing type of non-fatal accidents
is cuts.
Age, Miss Higginbotham con
tinued, is an important factor in
home accidents.
Falls are the leading cause ot
accidents for children under five
and adults over 65. Stairs, furni
ture, toys and play equipment
and porches are most often invol
ved in injuries due to falls.
ACCIDENTS ON
RURAL HIGHWAYS
U. S. traffic accidents claimed
38,000 lives in 1961. More than
three-fourths of these fatalities
occurred on rural roads and high
ways, according to the National
Safety Council.
FOOD COLORS
Serve foods which look attrac
tive together on the plate, sug
gests Miss Elaine Stueber, Ex
tension nutritionist. A <meal
which is mostly one color will
not look as well as one which
combines the green of a vege
table with the white of potatoes,
the golden brown of fried chick
en and red of spiced apple. Not
all colors look well together. For
example, the purple-red of the
beet does not look well with the
bright red of the tomato.

watch for $5, furnish one of these
parts free, one crystal or one
