Patterson, Georgia, August 25,
1962 — Russell Tuten, already
recognized as front-runner in the
Eighth District Congressional
race, was given a further boost
here Friday night when thou
sands showed up for a rally and
barbecue.
Veteran political observers
said, “It was probably the big
gest rally for a Congressional
candidate ever held in Georgia.
It looked like a rally for a
MAJOR CANDIDATE FOR
GOVERNOR.”
Tuten supporters, jubilant
over the show of strength, began
predicting a victory on Septem
ber 12th. with out a runoff. Here
tofore. it had been generally a
greed that with six candidates
in the race, a runoff could hard
ly be avoided.
Recently, Tuten was named
leading candidate after a poll of
newspaper editors by the Valdos
ta Daily Times. The great crowd
at Friday’s rally seemed to con
firm the findings of the poll.
By drawing such an unprece
dented number of supporters,Tut
en proved himself to be a candi
date of undoubted voter appeal...
His speech was interrupted
numerous times by applause and
cheering, especially when he
flayed opponents for “smear
tactics” and “coattail riding.”
Enoch Walker, President of the
Patterson Lion’s Club, said, “The
crowd was the biggest ever to
assemble in Patterson. Senator
Talmadge was here for our park
dedication and we hold our an
nual 4th. of July fireworks dis
play here, but we never drew a
crowd before to compare with
this group of enthusiastic Tuten
supporters.”
MY HEARTFELT
THANKS
For helping me make the
Patterson rally the biggest
in the history of this area.
At least 4,000 and possibly
5,000 people were there from
all sections of the district.
I am so grateful to my Pierce
County friends for the biggest
political rally I’ve ever seen.
I wish I could thank you all
personally for the wonderful
support you are giving me.
(
Please stay on the job until
the polls close.
Sincerely,
Russell Tuten
