Tobacco Clean-up
Sale Is Planned
September 18-19
ATLANTA — Georgia Com
missioners of Agriculture Phil
Campbell announced today that
a tobacco clean-up sale will be
held in Douglas, Ga., September
18 and 19.
Commissioner Campbell stated
that the time and place of the
sale was determined after a care
ful survey of the Georgia-Florida
flue cured tobacco belt.
It was then determined that
Douglas was the place most cen
trally located to all unsold tobac
co and would therefore hold
transportation to a minimum.
U. S. D. A. graders and Stabi
lization officials will be repre
sented on the market.
accidental poisonings
Most accidental poisonings can
be prevented by a little care in
storing and handling. Never keep
household chemicals under the
kitchen sink. Children at crawl
ing age account for 37 percent of
all poisoning cases from bleaches
and lyes. Never transfer a poison
ous substance such as kerosene
or insecticides into a common
container as soft drink or milk
bottle. A child can easily mistake
them for food or drink, suggests
Miss Lucille Higginbotham, Ex
tension health specialist.

Conservation
Essay Contest
Being Planned
The seventh annual SBOO soil
and water conservation essay con
test for all white Georgia high
school students in the Bth through
12th grades, has been announced
by Harold Haygood, President of
the Georgia Association of Soil
Conservation District Supervisors.
The Georgia Bankers Associat
ion is again joining with the
Georgia Association of Soil Con
servation District Supervisors in
sponsoring the essay contest.
First prize for the winning essay
is an SBOO four year tuition
scholarship in a state college or
university, given by the Bankers’
Association. In addition, county
and district prizes will be award
ed by local Soil and Water Con
servation Districts. In 1961, these
prizes amounted to more than
$7,000 statewide.
“Soil Conservation Districts —
A Story of Service, Yesterday,
Today, and Tomorrow’’ is the
subject of the 1962 Contest. Es
says must not contain more than
1,500 words. All essays must be in
the hands of local district super
visors by November 2,1962. The
winner will be announced at the
annual meeting of the SCD State
Association in Macon in Decem
ber.
“The contest is designed to im
press upon students the impor
tance of soil and water, and to
help them to understand how
locally governed soil and water
conservation districts help to con
serve these natural resources,”
Haygood points out in his an
nouncement. “Georgia is blessed
with good soil and an abundant
supply of water,” he says, “but
it must be properly managed to
meet the needs of present and
future generations.”
“The 27 Soil and Water Con
servation Districts in Georgia,
with technical assistance from
the Soil Conservation Service,
have made great progress during
their 25 years of operation,” Hay
good says. “The 217 District
Supervisors receive no pay ex
cept in the knowledge that they
have helped mankind through
the conservation and wise use of
our vital natural resources,” he
adds.
“Both the Georgia Bankers’ As
sociation and member banks have
already been vitally interested
in soil and water conservation,”
President Jim L. Gillis says.
“We strongly endorse the Soil
and Water Conservation District
Program and are happy to joint
ly sponsor the essay contest to
