As severe outbreaks of influen za tend to recur in two-year cy cles, this could be an epedemic year. Because of this approaching danger, flu shots should be ta ken soon, especially by persons in certain “high risk” groups, Miss Lucile Higginbotham, head of the Extension health depart ment, urged this week. Modern influenza vaccines offering pro tection against Asian flu and several other common influenza strains are now available, she pointed out. Reaction to the vaccines are uncommon and usually mild when they do occur. However, medical authorities say that it is not advisable for persons to take this vaccine who are unable to eat eggs or chicken because of a food allergy, or who have had a definite allergic reaction from previous vaccines produced in eggs T wo injections are being re commended for persons who have never been immunized against flu. Only one injection is re quired for persons who have had flu vaccine in recent years. “High risk groups” especially urged to obtain immunization a gainst influenza include all per sons over 65 years of age, indivi duals suffering from certain chronic disorders and expectant mothers.
