All Within a Mile
By Charles E. Hooper
“Man, it’s hot . . . let’s rest a
minute in the shade!” My cycling
companion expressed my senti
ments exactly. It had been some
eighteen years since I had ridden
a bicycle . . . yet here it was the
middle of July, hotter than blazes
and I was taking a bicycle tour
of Saint Simons Island!
“What’s that historic marker
say?” “I don’t know, let’s see.”
The next mile of bicycling
proved to be the easiest . . .even
the soreness in my legs and arms
vanished because of the “interest
ing mile at Saint Simons.”
We passed the site of General
Oglethorpe’s Farm . . . Here
Georgia’s founder cultivated or
anges, figs and grapes on his
fifty-acre farm. Orange Hall, the
two story dwelling that he erect
ed here was the only home that
Oglethorpe ever owned in Ameri
ca.
Around a bend in the road, we
saw a low-gabled frame structure,
surrounded by the graves of early
settlers, and amid a grove of moss
hung giant live oaks. It was
Christ Episcopal Church. The pre
sent structure, in which regular
services are still held, was erect
ed in 1875 to replace the first
church in which both John Wes
ley and Charles Wesley preached.
Wesley Oak, a large tree shading
the churchyard, marks the place
where the Wesley’s preached to
the Colonists and friendly In
dians.
Approximately a half-mile
from Christ Church are the ruins
of Fort Frederica. The fort was
built by General Oglethorpe in
the shape of a crescent. The
streets were laid off at right an
gles and lined with orange trees.
It was here that the English regu
lars and colonial troops, along
with a few Indians, had ambush
ed and defeated a large Spanish
force. This battle was later to be
named the Famous Battle of
Bloody Marsh. It was a most im
portant battle because it deter
mined that Georgia and South
Carolina would be English speak
ing areas instead of Spanish.
This particular “mile” is per
haps the most historic one on
beautiful Saint Simons Island off
the coast of Brunswick. It is a
mile of Georgia's founding his
tory.
Plan a w’eek-end trip to the
Golden Isles of Georgia and make
the famous “mile" trip. Your local
service station operator will be
glad to assist you.
REMOVING
RADIOACTIVITY
FROM WATER
Boiling does not destroy radio
activity in water. The easiest
way to remove it would be to
mix uncontaminated clay subsoil
with the water and allow it to
settle out over a period of a day.
then strain the clearest part
through several thicknesses of
clean cloth or paper towel. The
cloth or towel then should be
disposed of, according to infor
mation put out by the U. S. De
partment of Agriculture.
