Using Metal Poles
To 'Shake' Pecans
May Be Dangerous
Pecan growers of Brantley
County were warned this week
that the use of metal poles for
shaking, or “framing,” nuts from
trees is extremely hazardous and
could result in serious injury or
death.
The warning came from B. F.
David, the Georgia Power Company’s
local manager for this area.
"Both distribution and high-voltage
lines often cross pecan orchards,”
Mr. David explained, “and some of
these lines are within reach of har
vesting equipment.”
The Georgia Power official point
ed out that even when cane or
wooden poles are used for harvest
ing, extreme caution should be exer
cised so that the worker does not
touch any power lines with the pole.
When metal poles are used, the dan
ger is increased even more. The
power company urges strongly
against using metal poles for pecan
harvesting.
If the pole and ground are wet, the
company’s safety engineers point
out, a wooden pole in contact with
power lines can kin just as quickly

New Year Cheer
We hope the New Year
brings you luck and much
pleasure. Best regards.
We look to many hours of happy association with our good
friends and patrons during the coming year. We hope the year will
be a happy and prosperous one.
HOBOKEN,
as can a metal pole.
A Georgia law, enacted in 1960,
provides penalties for unsafe prac
tices in the vincinity of power lines
and makes it the responsibility of
employers to guard their workers
from injury which could result from
contacting a power line.
