JOHN M. KEEN, DESCENDANT OF PIONEER
SOUTH GEORGIA FAMILY, DIES IN FLORIDA
John M. Keen, former state
legislator, Polk County commis
sioner, and city commissioner
of Lakeland, died December 18,
at the Polk County Paralytic
Hospital at Bartow, Fla. At 95,
he was the oldest living native of
what is now Lakeland.
Mr. Keen was born in 1867 in
a log cabin with a dirt floor in
what is now the Idlewild subdi
vision in Southwest Lakeland. He
was the son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Jesse and Elizabeth Brannen
Keen, who came here from Lake
City the previous year.
Mr. Keen was a grandson of
the late Theophilus Keen and
Elizabeth Raulerson, who was a
daughter of Jacob Raulerson of
Wayne and Brantley counties.
A new elementary school which
is to be built in Southwest Lake
land is to be named in honor of
Mr. Keen and his family.
Mr. Keen was a member of
the jury of the first Polk County
Court session on Aug. 1, 1893.
In 1902, he was appointed to
fill the unexpired term on the
county commission of R. O.
Cresap, who had resigned. Also
that year, he was appointed to
represent Polk County at the
Florida State Fair at Lake City
and to oversee the county’s ex
hibit at the fair. Mr. Keen was

Served On Council
On Dec. 7, 1908, Mr. Keen, as
chairman of the county com
mission, helped lay the corner
stone of the Polk County court
house at Bartow. He served a
total of seven years on the com
mission.
Also during the first decade of
the 20th Century, Mr. Keen
served several years on the
Lakeland City Council, which
in 1913 was replaced by the city

His last term on the commission
was in 1918.
In 1920, Mr. Keen was elect
ed to the Florida House of Rep
resentatives for a four-year term.
State Posts Held
On Jan. 10, 1940, Mr. Keen
was afflicted with paralysis in
his left side, and had been bed
fast since. He had been in the
Polk County Paralytic Hospital
since 1956.
Mr. Keen was a member of
the State Livestock Board, the
State Inspection Board, and a
member of Lakeland Lodge 91,

He is survived by two daugh
ters, Mrs. Myrtle Lauffer and
I Mrs. Elizabeth B. Rumph, both
of Lakeland; two sisters, Mrs.

K. Smith, both of Lakeland;
several nieces and nephews; and
two grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.

Commercial red meat produc
tion in Georgia during October
was nine percent above last year,
according to the Georgia Crop
Reporting Service. October pro
duction totaled over 36,000,000
pounds. Production was up more
than seasonally from September
with a sharp 25 percent increase.
