Pilcher Urges
For Southeast
Crawford L. Pilcher, chairman of
the Georgia Public Service Commis
sion, testified last week before the
Federal Power Commission in Wash
ington to urge that Southern Natural
Gas Company be authorized to con
struct a pipeline from Macon south
east to Brunswick and that adequate
supplies of natural gas be allocated
to serve 36 cities in southeast Geor
gia.
In connection with the hearing Mr.
Pilcher said, “We hope that ETC
will give us a favorable decision and
that it will be soon enough for con
struction to begin by late spring or
early summer.”
The plan to serve southeast Geor
gia has been a combined effort of
the commission, the pipeline com
pany and Atlanta Gas Light Com
pany. The latter was granted author
ity last fall by the commission to
serve the area and now holds fran
chises to serve natural gas to 35 cit
ies in the area.
Atlanta Gas Light officials said

that they would begin construction
of their connecting lines from the
cities to the pipeline as soon as Sou
thern Natural begins its work.
Mr. Pilcher expressed hope that
the work would progress fast enough
so that natural gas service would be
available to some of the cities this
year.
Representatives of Atlanta Gas
Light and the City of Vidalia also
appeared at the FPC hearing.

FOOD FOR TREES
The food a tree uses is manufac
tured in the leaves and needles.
Therefore, good healthy tops or
crowns are necessary for good grow
th. That’s why Extension foresters
at the University of Georgia recom
mend that pine stands be thinned
fairly early—while the trees are
still putting on good height growth.
