Before Gardening
—Read the Label
By Daniel H. G. Gbver. M. D.
With the long-awaited coming of
Spring, home gardeners are eagerly
reaching for spades, forks, and cul
tivators to till the good earth and
sow the seeds that will bring fresh
homegrown vegetables and flowers
to brighten the months ahead. And
not long after the green seedlings
bread through, many will apply a
variety of sprays, dusts or aerosols
to fight the onslaught of plant-de
vouring insects. Even before then
some will prepare with fertilizers
and weed killers. Before using any of
these effective gradening aids be
sure to read the label, particularly
the precautions.
Today there are over 40,000
brands of insecticides and pesticides
registered with the U. S. Depart
ment of Agriculture, and many con
tain chemicals that are extremely
poisonous to people and animals, as
well as to the insects they are in
tended to kill.
These are all highly effective in
secticides, but can be dangerous and
even deadly if not used with proper
caution. As one Agricultural Experi
ment Station expert puts it, “Exper
ience has demonstrated clearly that
it is not the use of pesticides, but
rather their misuse, that has ac-

Some of these compounds are
poisonous when inhaled or swallow
ed, others when absorbed through
the skin. When applying these sub
stances, be certain that no one, es
pecially a child, is nearby. Keep pets
out of the way. Be careful of wind or
drift, to avoid inhaling dusts or
sprays. If any of the material gets
on your clothing, wash the clothes
and yourself immediately. And even
though this does not happen, wash
hands and face throughly after each
use of insecticides.
When storing unused portions of
these materials, even if only until
tomorrow or next weekend, be sure
they are kept in their original con
tainers and placed out of reach and
out of sight of children. Never put
left-over liquids in soft drink bottles,
which are an obvious temptation to
children.
If the misfortune of accidental
poisoning does occur, the victim
should be taken to the doctor or hos
pital emergency room immediately.
And in order that the proper treat
ment can be given rapidly, be pre
pared to tell the doctor the name of
the product that was used. Even bet
ter, give him the original container
and label. He can then quickly de
termine the specific measures for
appropriate treatment. Remember,
always read the label before using
and follow the precautions carefully.
There IS a cure for cancer,
many types of cancer at least. To
day eight out of ten breast can
cers treated early while still lo
calized are being cured; eight out
of ten cancers of the uterus; six
out of ten cancers of the colon
and rectum; five out of ten can
cers of the postate gland — be
ing cured if treated early while
cancer is localized. Yet cancers of
these four sites alone will kill
92,500 men and women this year,
the American Cancer Society,
Georgia Division reports. Have
your doctor give you a health
check-up annually and ask him
to include examination for can
cers of the breast, uterus, colon,
rectum, postate and other sites.
It may save your life.
Cancer, unlike the rattlesnake,
usually gives no warning. It
starts without pain and cancers of
some of the most common sites
can be cured as much as eight
out of every ten times if treated
early while still localized. The
American Cancer Society, Geor
gia Division urges you to ask
your doctor for a regular health
check-up including examination
for colon, rectal, postate, breast
and uterine cancer.

THEY AREN'T TOYS
An innocent looking machine—the
lawn mower—kills people every
year. “Lawn mowers aren’t toys,”
Extension Engineer Willis Huston
said this week. When using them,
the word is “caution." The engineer
explained that the blade of a rotary
mower travels at about 150 miles an
hour. When the blade hits small,
hard objects a flying missile is e
jected “This is just as dangerous
as a bullet,” Mr. Huston stated in
urging homeowners never to allow
children to stand near an operating
mower.
