People Get Wrong ideas of Fractures
By The Medical Association
of Georgia
“Is it broken or just fractured,
doctor? 1 don’t think it's broken be
cause I can move my fingers.” This
comment illustrates two common
misconceptions about fractures. The
first misconception is that a break
and a fracture are different. They’re
not. The breaking of a bone is a
fracture. The second misconception
is that the ability to move one’s
fingers, or toes as the case may be,
indicates that the arm or leg isn’t
broken. It doesn’t. A person can
break his arm or leg and still move
the digits on the affected limb. Only
paralysis or nerve damage prevents
fingers and toes from moving.
Another common error is to as
sume that unless a fracture is held
completely still it cannot heal. On
the contrary, fractures of ribs, the
spine or pelvis heal quite well des
pite the fact that it is practically
impossible to keep the affected
bones from moving. Often a splint
will do the job and a plaster cast is
unnecessary. Neither should one as
sume that a plaster cast necessarily
indicates a fracture. Serious injuries
to ligaments may require more im
mobilization than broken bones.
It is ofjen thought that bones in
younger persons heal faster than
those iq older people. It is true that
children's bones heal faster than
those in adults. But the bones of an
adult of fifty heal as fast as those
in a person of twenty Broken bones
in older persons are often more ser
ious than in younger persons not
because of the length of time it
takes the . bones to heal but because
complications develop. Many older
persons have arthritis in joints near
the broken bones and the joints are
stiff when the case is removed.
The most obvious tip-off that a
bone is broken is distortion of the
arm or other affected parts of the
body Another tip-off is rapid and
massive swelling especially when
bleeding and bruising accompany it.

When a bone is fractured, it is
important to splint it as soon as
possible. This keeps the bone from
moving as much as is possible, and
prevents further injury.
There are many types of fractures,
depending on the bone that is involv
ed and the way the bre^jk appears
on X-ray examination A greenstick
fracture is one in which one side of
a bone is fractured and the other
bent When the fractured bone pene
trates through the skin, the condi
tion is called a compound or open
fracture. An external wound may al
so involve a fracture. This would be
called a compound fracture even
though the bone doesn’t protrude
Compound fractures are generally
more serious than simple fractures
because of the increased danger of
bleeding and infection.
DOC MAG SAYS:
Bones are active living tissues with
amazing abilities to repair them
selves. Fractures are serious but
many and perhaps most bones heal
promptly and strongly. They give
little or no permanent trouble once
they've healed.
Social Security Tip
0. L. I*ope, Social Security Dis
trict Manager in Waycross, has of
fered a few tips on how to get your
first social security check when it is
due.
If you are nearing retirement, Po
pe suggests that you gel in touch
with your social security office, and
take some proof of your age with
you. Have a member of his staff ex
amine whatever proof you may have
to see if it will be acceptable when
you do retire.
Should you need better evidence
of your date of birth, you will be
given information to help you get
that additional evidence.

Rights Proposal,
Prayer Decision
Hit by Talmadge
Atlanta —- Sen. Herman E.
Talmadge, like many other
Americans, is incensed over two
recent developments in the
national capital. One was the U.
S. Supreme Court’s decision out
lawing Bible reading in the public
schools; the other was President
Kennedy’s latest proposal for
more forced integration. Com
menting on the latter, the Georgia
Senator said:
“Man’s relation to his fellow
man is largely a matter of the
human mind and heart, and must
necessarily be solved on the local
community level in accordance
with local desires and the dictates
of the individual conscience,
especially inasmuch as private
property rights and freedom of
association are involved. Force
legislation is not the answer to
human conduct.
“In Reconstruction Days,
Congress passed a statute extend
ing federal power to private
property and private contracts.
The Supreme Court held such
extension of federal powers un
constitutional, declaring that the
Congress had no power to legis
late in these areas under the 14th
Amendment. Just as such pro
posals violated the Constitution
then, they are still unconstitu
tional.
“I shall vigorously oppose the
President’s package of unconsti
tutional measures.”
On the Supreme Court’s Bible
reading ruling, Sen. Talmadge
said that “instead of serving to
protect and preserve religious
freedom, which clearly is the
intent of the First Amendment,
the Supreme Court has rendered
a decision offensive to everyone
who wishes to keep this a
religious nation where men,
women and children may worship
God in freedom.” He continued:
“The Supreme Court’s decision
prohibiting the reading of the
Scripture or reciting the Lord’s
Prayer in our public schools is
an amendment to the Constitu
tion of the United States.
Amendments to the Constitution
can only be made by two-thirds
of the Congress and ratification
by three-fourths of the states.
“It is regrettable indeed that
the Supreme Court has again
grossly distorted the Constitution
of the United States. The court
has struck an irrovocable blow
to religious freedom and morality
in the United States of America.”
If you are within three months of
retirement age, the social security
office can take your application for
benefits now. Go to the social secur
ity office and take with you proof of
your age and your social security
card, of course.
Pope said that even though you
are still working and are 65 years
old, you can apply at any time.
Many people think that you have to
retire completely to get any bene
fits. This is not true, Pope said.

High temperature flue or radiant pot type curing
bakes tobacco... leaves brittle, “cooked out” leaves.
Gastobac’s low temperature curing system avoids
extreme heat, dries your tobacco faster, safely,
evenly. Air pulled in through bottom vents is
heated at a low temperature, then rises through the
tobacco. This warm, even flow of air picks up
moisture from the leaves, carries it out the top
vent.* With Gastobac curing, more of the valuable
gums and oils remain in the leaf. . . produces a
cleaner, heavier-bodied leaf that brings highest price
at the market.
•Gastobac ventilators have a direct one-pull outside
control for easy, accurate setting.
GASTOBAC outsells all other
gas curing systems combined!
Mr. Farmer, you can now buy a tobacco curer as much as $72.95 less
than we sold them for last year. This is the cheapest they have
ever been sold for in South Georgia. See us before you buy. We
