NITROGEN LOSS
As a result of recent heavy rains,
considerable nitrogen applied to cot
ton may be leached out of the root
zone. Cooperative Extension Service
Agronomist P. J. Bergeaux said the
amount of nitrogen lost will depend
upon the amount and intensity of
the rainfall and the texture of the
soil. He said lighter, sandier type
soils are more subject to leaching
loss.

MILLION LIVING
PROVE CANCER
CAN BE CURED
“Cancer can be cured when
detected early.”
To support that statement,
Miss Lucille Higginbotham, head
of the Cooperative Extension Ser
vice health department, Univer
sity of Georgia, pointed out there
are 1,200,000 living Americans
who have been cured of the
disease.
She explained the term “cured”
is applied to patients who have
been free of the disease five
years or longer after being diag
nosed and treated. Miss Higgin
botham added that another 700,-
000 patients treated in the next
five years will join the ranks of
the cancer cured.
With present-day methods of
diagnosing and treating cancer,
one of every three cases treated
is successful, the health specialist
stated.
Cancer may appear at any age,
though with increasing frequency
with advancing age. Miss Higgin
botham said half the deaths
among children under 15 are due
to leukemia, cancer of the blood
forming tissues. “Acute leukemia
in children is treated by drugs
which have extended life from a
few months to as long as several
years,” she explained. “When
chronic leukemia appears, the in
dividual usually is over 25, and
the disease progresses slower.”
Early detection is extremely
important in cases where it is
still possible to remove the can
cer by surgery, or to destroy it
through drugs and radiation. Miss
Higginbotham said a complete
physical examination every year,
regardless of whether a medical
problem is suspected, is the best
way to detect cancer in the
early stages.
She added that it also is impor
tant to know and recognize the
seven warning signals of cancer.
“If a signal lasts longer than two
weeks, an appointment should be
made with the family physician
as soon as possible.”

EFFICIENT FARMING
One hour of farm labor produces
four times as much food and fiber as
it did in 1919-21. Crop production is
58 percent higher per acre. Output
per breeding animal is 81 percent
greater. One farm worker produces
food for himself and 27 others.
