Education Is More
Important Than Ever,
Labor Official Says
Young people joining the labor
force before they complete their ed
ucation not only cheat themselves
but act as a brake on the economic
growth of the state, according to
Georgia’s Commissioner of Labor,
Ben T. Huiet.
He stated that he was encouraged
by the concentrated drive to get our
dropouts and potential dropouts
back in school this fall, but express
ed concern about those who are now
working. “I fear that many of our
most capable young boys and girls
will hang on to jobs that look good
at the moment instead of returning
to school. They will be selling their
birthright for a mess of pottage.”
The economic growth of the state
is already being slowed by a short
age of technically trained people at
the same time the pool of unemploy
ed and untrained youth gets ^bigger
and bigger. Many of those now' work
ing will join this pool as automa
tion continues to take its toll unless
they return to school now ond com
plete their training, the Labor Com
missioner warned.
Speaking directly to the young
people Commissioner Huiet said,
“Complete your training and share
in Georgia’s bright future. If yes
terday’s training is inadequate for
today, just think what tomorrow will
demand.”
BULK FEED BINS
SAVE MONEY BUT
PRESENT PROBLEMS
In an effort to reduce feed costs,
most Georgia poultrymen use bulk
feed bins in their operations. Bulk
bins have resulted in tremendous
savings, but they must be managed
properly to prevent costly problems.
That’s the opinion of Jerry Cox of
the Cooperative Extension Service
poultry department, University of
Georgia.
Discussing some of the problems
that can arise, Mr. Cox said conden
sation may cause feed to stick in
bulk bins, resulting in the growth of
molds.
Mr. Cox recommended checking
all bulk bins carefully to see if feed
is sticking to the sides. He explain
ed the several toxic factors may be
found in molded feed, and added
that such feed should not be fed to
chickens.
“The small saving from feeding
molded feed is greatly offset by the
possibility of causing a disease out
break in the flock,” he declared.
Another problem with bulk bins is
difficulty in determining feed intake
by birds. Mr. Cox said feed consump
tion records are important and ne
cessary in evaluating the success of
the management program.
