SOME WAYS TO KEEP
YOUR GOOD HEALTH
When we think about good
health, illness and medical care,
we often tend to be more emo
tional than rational. When we are
well we are indifferent about
ways of keeping our good health.
Yet, when we are ill, we insist
on having the best of medical
care.
Good health involves many
things. No matter how many and
how good our physicians they
cannot guarantee good health un
less we take the proper personal
responsibility.
To place responsibilities where
they belong, we must clearly see
the distinction between health
and medical care.
Medical care is a service ren
dered by a highly-skilled, highly
trained physician and other ex
perienced medical personnel. It
is a service for which we pay and
it forms a vital part of a good
health program.
Health is a personal, family
and community matter which in
a large measure is determined by
what we do in a number of im
portant activities. Physicians can

Health and medical authorities
offer the following suggestions
to help maintain good physical
and mental health:
1. Good medical care. It is im
portant that you have a family
physician and that he be ac
quainted with your health prob
lems. Periodic checkups may cor
rect some ailments and may pre
vent others from becoming ser
ious. Your physician is the key
person in helping to protect your
health and keeping you in good
physical condition.
2. Balanced diet. Good health
is not possible without adhere
nce to the principles of good
and how much food to eat in
relationship to age and activity is
a most significant part of any
total health program.
3. Exercise and rest. A basic
requirement in maintaining good
health is a sound program of re
creational activities, exercise and
rest.
7. Adults responsible for the
safety of their elderly parents
should offer extra protection to
compensate for any disabilities.

Banks Major Lenders
To Georgia Farmers,
Lending Summary Shows
Georgia banks remain a major
source of credit and other financial
services to agriculture according to
J. A. McDuffie, executive vice-presi
dent and cashier of Peoples Bank,
who represents the Georgia Bankers
Association as Pierce County Com
mitteeman.
Based on the 22nd annual farm
lending summary of the Agricul
tural Committee of The American
Bankers Association, Mr. McDuffie
reported that at the beginning of the
year, Georgia banks were helping
farmers with slls milion in loans,
20 per cent more than a year pre
vious. This total included $52 mil
lion in production loans and $63 mil
lion in farm mortgages. At the same
time, $39 million in farm loans was
held by life insurance companies;
S7O million by the Federal Land
Banks; S4B million by Production
Credit Associations; and sll million
in nonreal estate loans plus $49 mil
lion in real estate loans by the Farm
ers Home Administration. About 47
per cent of the production credit
extended by lending institutions to
Georgia farmers came from banks.
Mr. McDuffie said that “bankers
in Georgia as well as throughout the
country, are taking a realistic look
at agriculture, appraising it from the
standpoint of its total contribution to
the economy. Through the years the
agricultural industry, as a part of
the total economy, has remained re
latively stable, with the ‘off-the
farm’ portion becoming increasingly
significant. Bankers, therefore, are
broading their services and are al
so developing and promoting pro
grams that consider the interwoven
relationships between farmers and
related businesses.
“Capital has become one of the
main pillars in agriculture, with the
total investment increasing fourfold
during the past 20 years. Today
farm families nationally have ap
proximately $196 billion invested in
their operations, with the average
investment per farm estimated to be
$47,632 — twice the amount reported
just 10 years ago.”
McDuffie stressed the importance
of farmers and bankers working
closely together to improve farm fi
nancial arrangements. He reported
that 94 per cent of insured banks
throughout the country had agricul
tural loans outstanding as the first
of the year, with 95 per cent of the
banks in Georgia extending credit
to farm people.
Georgia Residents May
Obtain Proof of Age
From Census Bureau
Last year, more than 16,000 resi
dents of Georgia turned to the Bu
reau of the Census, U. S. Depart
ment of Commerce, for help in prov
ing where and when they were bom,
the Bureau reported today. They
needed proof of age to collect social
security and other retirement bene
fits. They needed it to obtain pass
ports. They needed it to qualify for
jobs carrying certain age or citizen
ship requirements. They needed it
for some forms of insurance.
These persons who requested as
sistance from the Census Bureau
last year were among an estimated
20 million United States residents
who are without proof of age or
birthplace. The historical records of
the Census Bureau provide the only
acceptable source of this information
for many of these people. Since 350
million persons, many of them listed
several times in separate censuses.
The Bureau has provided copies of
these records to about three and
one-half million people, as legal
proof of age, place of birth, citizen
ship, or kinship.
Persons seeking such a record for
social security purposes should go
to the local Social Security Office,
or, for other purposes, write to the
Personal Census Service Branch, Bu
reau of the Census, Pittsburg, Kan
sas, for an application form. A fee of
$3.00 is charged for a search of not
more than two censuses for one per
son and for one copy of the infor
mation found. Additional copies cost
SI.OO each. An expedited search
costs $4.00. Expedited searches are
usually completed within a few days
while the routine $3.00 search may
take up to 30 days, depending upon
the backlog of requests.
The personal information in the re
cords of the 1900 and later Censuses
is confidential by law and may be
furnished only upon the written re
quest of the person to whom it re
lates or. for a proper purpose, a le
gal representative such as a guard
ian or administrator of an estate. In
formation regarding a child who has
not reached legal age may be obtain
ed upon the written request of either
parent.
