Tales Out of School
By Bernice McCullar
State Department of Education
HI TOM OF LONESOME
VALLEY — If you want your
children to read this summer,
add to their bookshelves and see
that they are happily acquainted
with your local library. My fa
vorite group of readers is the
Bookworm Club, inspired by li
brarian Edith Foster of Carroll
ton. My favorite children’s books
of this moment are these: a char
ming book for the sandbox set,
called HI TOM, about a boy in
Lonesome Valley, and another
called PHANTOM TOLLBOTH,
which I think will be a classic
like those of Lewis Carroll of
Jonathan Swift.
TOTHINK FORTHEM
SELVES? Mamma: “I am going
to teach my child to think for
himself.” Friend: ‘‘Oh, for good
ness sake, don’t do that. Teach
him to think like other people.
It's the ones who think for them
selves that humanity gives its
hemlock cocktails to.”
THE WHOLE FAMILY WENT
— You can tell that a school
board member is interested i n
education when he treks cross
country all the way to Denver,
Colorado, to the national conven
tion, and takes his wife, hi s
mother, and all of his children
including one that’s just 18 mon
ths old. Enterprising Jack Acree,
the able executive secretary of
the Georgia School Boards Asso
ciation, not only welcomed this
group (which was School Board
member James McCallum and
his family, of Coffee county) but
he provided a high chair at the
Georgia breakfast!
ORCHIDS TO — The Bulldog
Reporters of Winder High School
who broadcast from the White
House with the help of Pierre
Salinger, the press secretary o f
President Kennedy to the
Pelham High School, where the
excellent program on private en
terprise got plaudits from Mer
rill, Fenner, and Lynch . . . Spal
ding and Sumter for its work
with retarded youngsters
Flowery Branch in Hall County
for its elementary program in
Spanish — Heard County Lions
Club for giving scholarship med
als to youngsters who have stay
ed on the Honor Roll — Kermit
Harris and his Tallullah Falls
school for their pioneering in a
12 months’ school program.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR CHILD?
Did you know that statistics show
that one girl out of every 6 wants
to become a teacher, and one boy
out of every 17 does?
SHE VOTED AGAINST HIM
— Witty Mrs. T. L. Everett,
whose husband is longtime super
intendent of the Ware county
schools, claims that she voted a
gainst him the first time he ran.
“I thought you marked OUT the
one you were for.” Together they
have worked hard for many years
in the schools of their county.
Working once with drop-outs a
mong the colorful and interesting
people in the Okefenokee Swamp,
Mrs. Everett encountered a 12
year old with a baby in her arms.
She said to the 12 year old’s
mother, ‘‘Why did you let her
get married when she herself is
just a baby?" The mama replied,
“Well, she had set up with
George two or three times, and
we decided they might as well
get married."
THE WAY IT IS — The next
time you hear somebody say that
teachers get paid for 12 months
but work only 9, give them these
facts: teachers have a contract for
10 months. That is 180 days of
actual teaching, 2 weeks of pre
planning and post planning, and
a two week vacation. They get
the pay divided into 12 months.
It was set up that way for the
convenience of the state because
state funds come in monthly.
(Some schools are moving toward
a 190 day year instead of 180.)
WHY HE STOPPED — In John
Palmer’s WSB drop-out drama,
“The Quitter,” the boy whose
story was told said that he quit
because his classes were not in
teresting and because nobody
seemed to care much whether he
quit or not. Anybody drop out of
your school for those reasons?
RETURN ENGAGEMENT —
You will be interested to know
that Dr. Lester Nelson of the
Ford Foundation, who was here
to talk to the superintendents in
May, will be back in Georgia to
talk to school board members in
September.
BARBECUED CHICKEN
For good barbecued chicken,
Extension Poultry Marketing Spe
cialist R. A. Gayvert suggests
selecting well-fleshed broilers, un
iform in size, and weighing two
to two-and-a-half pounds each.
Broilers may be either halved or
quartered. Use a simple com
mercial grill, or build an outdoor
pit of cinder or concrete blocks.
Make the fire from charcoal or
charcoal briquets. Provide an
even heat and allow from one to
□ne-and-a-half hours for cooking.

The Brantley Enterprise, you
don’t have to borrow your
neighbor’s paper to see what
s going on in your county.

CHECK PECAN TREES
Checking pecan trees this time
of year will help determine fer
tilizer needs for next year. R L.
Livingston. Extension horticul
turist. suggests taking a look at
the terminal twig growth of the
trees. “If the twig growth this
year was less than five or six
inches.” he says, “the trees will
need more fertilizer next March
than they received this past
March."
