A Plea for Cooperation
This is a plea for cooperation on the part of people
who write news for various clubs and organizations.
DON'T SEND US ANY NEWS MORE THAN EIGHT
DAYS OLD.
If your club meets Tuesday, get the news in to us by
Wednesday noon and we’ll be glad to publish it. But if
you “forget” to send it in, then keep on forgetting it,
because we just don’t want it if it is out-dated.
WE HAVE HARPED ON THIS MATTER over and
over again, but still people keep sending in so-called
news weeks old.
The word “news” means something NEW. Make it
news for us by sending it in on time.
And too, reporters of the various clubs should realize
the value and courtesy of promptness.
TO BE A GOOD REPORTER YOU MUST BE
PROMPT. If you think your “news” is important, please
get busy at once and get it in to your newspaper ON
TIME.
Points to Remember When
Writing Your News Stories
1. Be sure to typewrite your news story.
2. Double-space on only ONE SIDE of paper.
3. Start at least two inches from top of page.
4. On regular size typewriter paper — no scraps, please.
5. Leave at least an inch or more margin at left side,
also right side of page.
6. Give dates of meeting, otherwise story will not be
published.
7. Get your news in EARLY, as paper must begin to set
type days ahead of publication.
8. Don’t send in any news MORE THAN A WEEK OLD.
9. Don’t put names of commercial firms in news. The
paper does not run free advertising for commercial firms.
10. If your news is worth printing, it is worth taking a
little trouble to get it right and in on time.
Your editor will be glad to cooperate with you if you
will go to the trouble of cooperating with him.

EGG PRODUCERS
NOW USING MORE
STARTED PULLETS
Because they no longer have the
time or facilities to raise large num
bers of replacements, Georgia egg
producers are buying more started
pullets each year. In many case. 1
:hey are converting brooder houses
to laying houses in order to increase
the number of layers without addi
tional investment.
Jerry Cox of the Cooperative Ex
tension poultry department made
those observations this week, and
added: “But the trend has brought
with it numerous problems."
Among the problems, he said, are
difficulties in obtaining top-quality
pullets, getting them when they are
needed, and doing it with as little
misunderstanding as possible.
To get top-quality birds, Mr. Cox
recommended always dealing with a
hatcheryman or grower who has a
reputation for delivering high-pro
ducing, disease-free pullets. “Egg
producers cannot afford to buy from
growers who cut corners in feeding
and management.”
He warned that “even under the
best conditions low-producing layers
will not return a profit.”
The Extension poultryman explain
ed that there is more to buying
started pullets than just agreeing on
price. “To prevent misunderstand
ings and assign responsibilities, it is
best to get all the details in writ
ing,” he advised.
Some of the points to include in
the agreement: (1) specify strain of
birds; (2) agree on age of pullets at
delivery; (3) specify hatching and
delivery dates; (4> set up feeding,
lighting and vaccination programs;
(5) decide in advance who is to
transport the pullets and who pays
the cost; (6) specify the amount of
compensation, if any, that is to be
allowed for disease or death losses
after the birds reach the buyer’s
farm; (7) agree on price and terms
of payment, and (8) know what is to
happen if the contract is canceled.
“Many problems with started pul
lets remain to be solved,” Mr. Cox
stated. He added, however, that
many difficulties can be minimized
by carefully selecting the source of
pullets, placing orders early, and
having a written agreement.

A SAFE HARVEST
Now that the harvest season is
here, don’t let your safety guard
down. That’s the advice of Willis E.
Huston, Cooperative Extension Ser
vice engineer. “Don’t attempt to oil.
grease or adjust the harvester when
It's in gear," he warned. “And never
operate the harvester too close to the
edge of a ditch or creek, and don’t
back it down steep grades or ramps.”
SKIP BREAKFAST
Skipping breakfast can bring on
decreased efficiency in the late
morning hours, according to nutri
tionists with the Cooperative Exten
sion Service. Leaving off breakfast
in an attempt to cut calories, they
explain, usually results in overeating
at other meals.
