IRRIGATION OF COTTON
Irrigation may still be helpful
for cotton, especially in North
and Middle Georgia. If cotton is
beginning to show wilt during
the hottest part of the day, the
crop needs to be watered. If

COTTON FARMER
FINDS SOIL TEST
PAYS DIVIDENDS
Bleckley County cotton grower R
G. Smith has proved to himself that
a soil test is a good guide for proper
cotton fertilization.
Mr. Smith attended a cotton pro
duction meeting arranged by County
Agent Charlton Lawson to bring him
self up to date on latest recommen
dations because he knew that good
fertilizer usage should be tied in
with other recommended practices.
Mr. Smith averaged 779 pounds
of lint cotton per acre on his 34-
acre allotment last year, and he feels
that a good liming and fertilization
program will really pay off when a
grower follows other sound produc
tion practices.
Mr. Smith corrected his soil acid
ity by applying limestone early in
1962. When he planted his cotton he
put down 600 pounds per acre of
a 5-10-15 fertilizer and followed this
with a side dressing of 82 pounds
of nitrogen per acre.
He planted 18 pounds per acre
of certified acid delinted cotton seed
in 36-inch rows and did not thin the
stand. He made 12 applications of
insecticides to control insects.
