and the interest shown by my many
friends in the present campaign at
this early stage of the primary.
I have worked hard as your Tax
Commissioner to give you the ser

as tax payers and voters. If you see
fit to re-elect me, I will continue to
work for the interest of the county
as a whole and not for the benefits

majority of you are familiar with
and not on a promise.
Since this is a very busy season

in person for I feel that the duties
of the office must be performed at
all cost. So I will have to rely to a
great extent on my many friends

Although I plan to see as many as
time will permit, if I miss seeing
you, please accept this as my per

SELLING TIMBER
The head of the Cooperative Ex
tension Service forestry department
believes good timber sales are per
haps the best incentive for good
management of timber. Dorsey Dy
er says poor sales lead to poor cut
ting practices, loss of income, and
often to a loss of interest in grow
ing timber as a crop. He adds that
planning is the first major step to
take in selling timber.

New Marking System
Adopted for Boaters
Boat operators on Georgia’s lake
will be seeing a set of new water
way markers this summer under a
regulation just adopted by the State
Game and Fish Commission.
The new regulation sets up a uni
form system of “signs” on the wa
ter, similar in function to common
road signs. The markers are de
signed to prevent accidents on the
water and to help boaters find their
way.
Under an agreement with the
State Game and Fish Commission,
the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers
will begin installing and maintain
ing the new markers on the 6 Corps
lakes in Georgia, including Allato
ona, Clark Hill, Fort Gaines, Hart
well. Lanier, and Seminole.
Most of the markers will serve
as directional or navigational aids
to boaters, indicating shallow water,
underwater obstructions, and direc
tions to landmarks, etc.
Some of the markers will bear
regulatory information. For exam
ple, a diamond with a cross inside
will indicate areas where boats are
not allowed to operate, especially in
swimming areas. A round circle with
a number inside may order boats to
reduce their speed, especially in a
congested area where boats are an
chored. The provisions of the regu
latory markers will be enforced by
State wildlife rangers, who have
been instructed to make misdea
meanor cases against vandals who
attempt to destroy or remove the
markers.
Only markers which follow the
pattern of the uniform waterway
markers adopted by the Council on
State governments will be accepted
as approved markers. However, of
ficial markers may only be placed
m locations approved by the dis
trict ranger chief of the Game Fish
Commission.
Adoption of the new marker sys
tem makes Georgia the 27th State
to ratify the inland navigational aid
system.
Georgia schools have strong com
petition for teachers Representa
tives of eastern school systems re
cruiting at Emory University re
cently have classroom salaries rang
ing as high as $14,000, nearly twice
top Georgia levels.

Broiler-Fryers,
Pecans Plentiful
During February
Broiler-fryers and pecans top the
list of foods that will be plentiful in
the Southeast during February, the
U. S. Department of Agriculture re
ports.
Other foods which USDA’s Agri
cultural Marketing Service says will
be in generous supply are beef, pork,
canned corn, potatoes, canned ripe
olives, and apples.
Marketings of broiler-fryers may
be nearly 10 percent above a year
earlier, USDA reports. The all-time
record 1963 pecan crop continues to
make these tree nut favorites plenti
ful, especially in shelled form.
Fed beef supplies will continue
large throughout February, and
plenty of pork will also be on hand
for February menus.
Three consecutive years of heavy
packs of canned corn mean a gener
ous supply of this vegetable item
throughout the winter, the Agricul
tural Marketing Service says.
December 1 stocks of potatoes
from the large fall crop totaled 139.2
million hundredweight This is ar
increase of 2 million hundredweight
over stocks in December 1962. an;
is second only to the record large
stocks in 1961. <
A large pack of canned ripe olive c
win make this favorite a wise buy
its February, the Agricultural Mark
eting Service points out.
Apples will be plentiful as grow
ers and shippers in Washington State
continue to move that area's near
record crop to market in February.
Georgia Employment Reached
New Peak In December
December employment in Georgia
broke all previous records for the
fifth consecutive month, according
to a report released by Commis
sioner of Labor Ben T. Huiet. There
were 1,161,200 workers on nonfarm
jobs which was an increase of 4,-
600 over November and 36,400 over
December 1962.
Employment in trade, increasing
for the second straight month, rose
to an all time high with 255,006
workers. Although employment for
the transportation, communication
and public utilities group declined
for the third straight month, the
level was up 1,700 over the same
month last year. Seasonal decline 5
were reflected in construction, real
estate and the service industry
group.

Transplanted pecan trees should
be protected from extreme cold.
Chis can be done says Horticulturist
R. L. Livingston of the Extension
Service, by mounding soil around
the tree tnmk to a height of 10 to
15 inches. Old sawdust at the rate
of one-half bushel per tree will do
the same job. The soil or sawdust
