Nitrogen Is
Key To Top
Pasture Production
Nitrogen is the production element
in Brantley County’s Big M Paetu-e
Program, according to George A.
Loyd County Agent. An abundant
supply of nitrogen is required in
each plant for growth. Even the
green color of grass is a nitrogen
compound.
The nitrogen content of grass is
highest in the young, tender parts
such as shoot and root tips. This
nitrogen present largely as protein
is constantly being changed.
Grass takes up the most nitrogen
during active growth. There must be
a continuous release of nitrogen from
the soil to produce a steady rate of
production throughout the season.
Adequate nitrogen throughout the
season is more important for pas
ture grass than for row crops. Pas
ture p’ants are not allowed to reach
maturity so their need for nitrogen

Nitrogen will increase the protein
content of grass, and protein is the
costly item in bought feed. Protein

Nitrogen for high yields is one of
the aims of the Big M Pasture Pro

terms of hay or grazing and also in
terms of protein and total digestible
nutrients produced. This is efficien
cy in action.
