St Simons Island family
enjoys total-electric living
throughout the year
"Last June,” says Jack Jenkins, an associate
with the Island Development Company, “I
made our home total-electric by installing an
electric heat pump. My family agrees that
you can’t beat the comfort and convenience
of a total-electric home.
"My wife likes the way the heat pump
eliminates dust and excessive moisture. J
like the central control. Just set it and for
get it. The electric heat pump heats or cools
automatically as the need arises."
More and more Georgia families, like the
Jack Jenkinses, are enjoying flameless total
electric living — and at savings, too—with
Georgia Power Company’s special low rate
for total-electric residential customers. Call
today for details.

Q. Our budget is limited but we
want good books for our children.
How can I know which ones to buy?
A. Your librarian, nursery school
operator, primary school teacher or
bookstore owner can help you make
good selections.
Q. What kind of book backs are
be-t to buy for youg children?
A. Many books are sold today
with durable backs such as cloth,
simulated leathers or other wash
able materials. Others even have
washable pages in the books. They
are worth an additional expenditure
because they last much longer.
Q. I like to buy books for friends
in the hospital or those who ere con
valescing. Do you have some sug
gestions?
A. Determine the special interest
of the friend, if possible, before
buying a book. Keep in mind the
weight and size of the book. Un

THE AMERICAN people have
expressed great concern over
recent decisions of the U. S.
Supreme Court which they feel
undermine the religious heritage
of this country.
They are confused and greatly
troubled at being told that
prayers and

schools. They
feel the court
has taken from
them the reli-
gious freedom
guaranteed by
the Constitution.
It seems to be a denial of the
fact that ours is a deeply reli
gious nation which was founded
by men and women seeking a
home where they and future
generations might worship God
in freedom.
The recent decisions are seen
as a virtual reversal of the prin
ciple supported by the Supreme
Court in 1952. At that time, the
court said:
“We are a religious people
whose institutions presuppose
a Supreme Being.”
Thus, there is a great need to
counteract the recent rulings of
the court and to reaffirm the
fundamental faith that we have
in Almighty God. This faith
after all is the foundation upon
which our civilization, our form
of government and our freedom
rests.

IT WAS MY opinion at the
time of the decisions on the New
York and Maryland cases that
they constituted a distortion of
the First Amendment. This is

still my belief. It was not the
intent of our Founding Fathers
to interfere with the free exer
cise of religion, but only to pre
vent the government from estab
lishing a state religion or offi
cially supporting one faith over
another.
They believed, as did Edmund
Burke, that “true religion is the
foundation of society, the basis
on which all true civil govern
ment rests, and from which
power derives its authority, laws
their efficacy, and both their
sanction.”
However, in deciding as it did,
the Supreme Court went against
this principle and inflicted great
damage to religious freedom and
morality in the United States.
In these times of turmoil, at
home and abroad, when man’s
freedom everywhere is threat
ened by a God-less ideology in
tent upon world domination, it is
more important than ever that
we maintain and protect the
abiding faith of our fathers.
With this in mind, there was
introduced last month in the
Senate a proposed amendment
to the Constitution which would
attempt to resolve this problem.
It would clarify the real mean
ing of the First Amendment
and, depending on state law and
the wishes of the people, permit
public expressions of our faith
in God.
Corrective action by the Con
gress is needed, and I will sup
port any reasonable legislation
to insure for all time the reli
gious freedom of our people.

Merry-go-round
Os Subsidies
If at first you don’t succeed,
try, try again.
First it was a subsidy to cotton
producers (the kind of subsidy,
of course, so dear to the hearts of
our agricultural managers, that
gets the consumer both ways —
by spending Treasury money to
keep prices high). But this made
things bad for the exporters, be
cause the price-supported Amer
ican cotton couldn’t compete in
world markets (the artificial U.
S. price is currently about one
third higher than the world mar
ket price).
So the government did what
comes naturally. It established
another subsidy, this time for the
exporters, so they could offer
the high-price American cotton
abroad at the lower world price.
But this, of course, made things
bad for the U. S. textile manu
facturers, who had to pay a third
more for their U. S. cotton than
their foreign competitors could
get it for.
So what has the government
come up with? Os course. An
other subsidy, this time to help
the textile mills overcome the
effect of the subsidy, given the
exporters to overcome the effect
of the subsidy given the growers.
At, least if this goes on long
enough we’ll all be able to say
that payment doesn’t really mat
ter, because we owe it to our
selves.
