EARLY TRAINING
RECOMMENDED FOR
TRAFFIC SAFETY
The head of the Cooperative Ex
tension Service health department
this week quoted a safety expert as
saying that the entire traffic safety
problem today is the result of in
adequate safety training during
childhood.
Miss Lucile Higginbotham of the
University of Georgia added there
is strong evidence that the child who
learns safe practices as a pedestrian
will carry them over as a motor
ist.
That children need to be taught
safe practices is evidenced by a re
cent survey in a large city, Miss
Higginbotham said. Seventy-six per
cent of all pedestrians struck while

occurred within two blocks of home.
Miss Higginbotham said national
statistics show this to be a nation
wide problem in both urban and ru
ral areas.
The Extension health specialist
continued that 2,500 children 14 years
of age and younger were fatally in
jured by motor vehicles in the U
nited States in 1962. She added that
another 78,000 were injured.
Miss Higginbotham declared that
these facts suggest an effective acci
dent prevention program which calls
on parents to assist their children in
mapping out the safest route to and

ren for several days to determine
the safest route, and emphasize safe

Children's Denta! Health
Early and regular dental care is
a standard recommendation of the
dental profession. But how soon is
“early” and how often is “regular”?
In a national survey, the Ameri
can Dental Association found that
dental patients under four years of
age had an average of three teeth
needing fillings. The highest inci
dence of decay occurred among those
aged 15 to 19, who had an average
of five teeth needing fillings. And
this is not counting those who sel
dom, if ever, see a dentist.
It was also revealed that 80 per
cent of the dental patients under the
age of 15 who were surveyed needed
fillings.
Children are highly susceptible to
dental decay, as this and other sur
veys have shown. With today’s diet
of sweet and easy-to-chew foods,
more diligent home and professional
care is necessary if good dental
health is to be maintained.
Home care is quite simple. The
teeth of those who eat sweet snacks
frequently during the day are sub
jected to. almost continuous acid at
tacks. Therefore sweets should be
kept to a minimum.
Besides increasing the possibility
of tooth decay with too many sweets,
Americans have compounded the
problem by almost eliminating all
fibrous, coarse foods which give
more exercise to the chewing mu
scles and which also serve to help
cleanse the tooth surfaces. Highly
cooked, soft foods, furthermore, read
ly become impacted between the
teeth and are more difficult to re
move by brushing. If and when
brushing is not possible, the mouth
should at least be rinsed with clear
water.
As for professional care, a child
should make his first visit to the
dentist when he has all 20 of his
first teeth, normally between two
and three years of age. During that
visit, he may need no more than a
thorough examination, including x
rays, and cleaning. However, some
pre-school children have cavities that
require treatment.
The child should visit the dentist
as often as the dentist recommends,
to see that the teeth are growing pro
perly. Contrary to common belief,
the first teeth are very important,
for they set the growth pattern for
the permanent teeth to follow.
Another study conducted by the
American Dental Association reveal
ed that a majority of the adult den
tal patients who were surveyed be
lieved that loss of teeth and wear
ing of dentures are inevitable. And
yet permanent teeth are meant to
be just that — permanent. But it
is not difficult to understand how
such ideas about them came into
existence. When more than half of
the population over 45 years of age
is wearing dentures, it would seem
reasonable to many children that
their dental future is not too bright.
Loss of teeth is not inevitable and
to think otherwise and give up den
tal care for the expectation of den
tures is like letting an injured arm
become gangrenous because an arti
ficial arm can be substituted. Arti
ficial teeth cannot be expected to be
as efficient as natural teeth.
If a generation of children and
their parents can be made aware of
and convinced of, the vital impor
tance of positive dental health as
well as early and regular dental
care, knowledge and professional
skills can maintain oral tissues in a
state of health and function through
out life.
If this care is not observed, then
in the future we can expect more
than the present estimate in the Uni
ted States of 97 million persons wit 1 ;
tooth decay, 23 million with gum
disease and 21 million with no teeth
at all.
We can save the teeth we have
and the teeth our children will have
if we take care — home and pro
fessional.
The body has many specialized
parts, and the health professions
have had to develop dozens of spec
ialities to treat these parts and the
diseases which afflict them.
Within dentistry, there are also
specialties. There is for example,
pedodontics, or children’s dentistry.
And there is orthodontics, a field
which deals with the problems of
malocclusion (poorly aligned teeth).
It is estimated that about 50 per
cent of the nation’s children are in
need of some form of orthodontic
supervision —for protruding teeth,
jutting or receding jaw or poorly
spaced teeth. This problem is most
common during the time the per
manent teeth are erupting.
Orthodontic ailments, if not treat
ed, can easily lead to faulty speech,
malnutrition and emotional disturb
ances. The emotional disturbances
stem from self-consciousness about
the facial deformities caused by mal
formed mouths.
Additionally, when teeth do not
meet properly, added strain is plac
ed on the gums and supporting bones,
which usually leads to periodontal or
gum disease. Another dental spec
iality is periodontics.
Periodontal disease is usually
thought of as an adult disorder, but
its incidence is disturbingly high a
mong children.
This disease — really a number
of diseases grouped under the one
heading — has many causes. There
is the stress previously mentioned,
there are local irritants such as tar
tar or calculus, and there is poor
nutrition.
Symptoms of this disease are a
bad mouth ordor, excessive saliva
tion, sensitive gums and, usually,
bleeding. Early detection and good
oral hygiene at home under the
watchful eyes of the parents are the
best weapons against the disease.
A fourth specialized area, al
though not a formal speciality, is
endodontics, a field dealing with
treatment of the pulp or “nerve” of
the tooth. In endodontic treatment,
teeth whose pulps have been affect
ed by deep decay or injury are pre
served by partial or complete remov
al of the pulp. The canal is then fill
ed and capped to prevent penetra
tion of bacteria or fluids into the
tooth. Through this process, teeth
which would have been considered
lost a few years ago can now be
saved and made useful for a life
time of service.
The family dentist, the dental
specialists and the parents form a
team which can give a child a firm
foundation of dental health habits on
which a lifetime of good dental
health habits on which a lifetime of
good dental health can be built.
CANCER TREATMENT
Modern treatments save one out
of three cancer patients today. Miss
Lucile Higginbotham, head of the
Cooperative Extension Service health
department, says it could be nearly
two out of three if the cancers were
detected earlier.
