Questions and Answers
on the Bible

WHY DO THE
GODLY SUFFER?
This has been the question on
the lips of Christians down
through the ages. Why is it that
so many of God’s people seem
to have nothing but trouble in
their life? Saints who, to all out
ward appearances at least, seem
to be trusting in the Lord are
beset by sickness, financial pro
blems and even death. Our
hearts cry out, Why?
For an answer to our problem,
let us go to the Bible which is
our final authority.
First of all, let us remember
that God never promised that
when we accepted Christ as Sa
viour and Lord that we would
henceforth have a life of ease,
free from care. If the Christian
church could promise that to the
unsaved, it would be the great
est insurance policy any company
could ever write and our churches
would be full and running over.
In fact, He promised just the op
posite, for in John 15:20 we read,
“Remember the word that I said
unto you, The servant is not
greater than his lord. If they
have persecuted me, they will al
so persecute you.”
And again, John 16:33: These
things I have spoken unto you,
that in me ye might have peace.
In the world ye shall have tri
bulation; but be of good cheer:
I have overcome the world.”
The first thing we discover as
we open our Bibles to find the
truth is that trouble and sorrow
are NOT sent as a punishment
from God. We can take great
comfort from this because so
many times we ask ourselves,
‘What have I done that God is
chastising me?’ And too often too
many Christians are quick to jud
ge another by saying, “Certainly
he must have sinned and God
is bringing judgment upon him ’•
Open your Bibles to the 9th and
Uth chapters of John. In the 9th
chapter we find Jesus stopping to
speak to the man who was blind
from birth —a man who had
never enjoyed a sunset, seen a
flower or looked upon the face
of his mother. The disciples ask
ed the question of Christ, “Who
did sin, this man, or his parents,
that he was born blind?” They
were saying, ‘Here is a man in
trouble. Is he being punished by
God, for a sin he has committed
or perhaps for something his par
ents have done?’ Jesus’ reply
was, “Neither hath this man sin
ned, nor his parents; but that
the words of God should be mani
fest in him.”
The thought then comes to us.
— But God has said, “All have
sinned and come short of the
glory of God. There is none
righteous, no not one.” Yes, this
is also true and what we have
said does not mean that this man
had never sinned or that your
godly neighbor or you yourself
are without sin. We all have fall
en far short of the glory of God.
but God does not bring trouble
to us as a punishment.
Then, if suffering is not punish
ment, what is it? There is still
the question. Why? We have three
positive teachings in the Bible
concerning this and they all de
pend upon the fact that God is
a sovereign God. He is not lim
ited. He is not bound by circum
stances. He is able to make, “All
things work together for good to
them that love God.” We are hu
man. We see only the dark side
of that which is happening to us
and so many times we are able
to see absolutely no good in it,
but God sees the end from the be
ginning and He knows what is
best for us. We have to trust
Him because He is the sovereign
God.
The FIRST thought is laid down
for us in the 12th chapter of He
brews and it concerns our char
acter. Look at the 10th verse —
“For, they, (our fathers) verily
for a few days chastened us as-
trade all over this section with
the finest of meat products at all
times. In fact, they are one of
the most substantial contributors
to the community, operating a
very modern packing concern,
meriting the support of the local
public and renders a service to
the trade and operates under a
system of public spirited manage
ment, thoroughly familiary with
every phase of this essential
business which adds to the grow
th and commercial activities of
this section.
To be able to make certain of
ter their own pleasure: but he,
(God) for our profit, that we
might be partakers of His holi
ness.” We need to be cleansed
and purified and many times we
are tested and tried as by fire
in the manner in which gold was
once refined —by the applica
tion of so much heat that the
dross and impurities would rise
to the top and could be discard
ed. The refiner would not reduce
the heat until he could see his
face reflected in the molten me
tal.
Just so God wants to see His
face reflected in our lives. We al
so read in Jeremiah 18:3, “Then
I went down to the potter’s house
and behold, he wrought a work
on the wheels.” God molds us in
to the image of His Son and
stamps the likeness of Christ up
on us thus answering our own
prayer of ‘Have Thine own way.
Lord”. Sometimes we don’t re
cognize the answer.
The SECOND teaching is found
regarding our service for Christ.

getting the very best of fresh

Courteous and efficient to a
marked degree, the manager has
surrounded himself with employ
ees who, like himself, are
thoroughly conversant with every
feature of the business and serve
you in a rapid and highly sat

John 15:2 tells us that “I am the
true vine, and my father is the
husbandman. Every branch in me
that beareth not fruit, he taketh
away; and every branch that
beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that
it may bring forth more fruit.”
Many of us who know little a
bout gardening are afraid to cut
our shrubbery back very much
for fear of killing it, but have
you ever watched a professional
nurseryman? It seems as though
he has ruined the bush, but oh,
the lovely roses which bloom as
a result of his severe pruning.
God sometimes must use harsh
measures with us in order to have
us bring forth fruit worthy of
Him. When we have suffered, we
have compassion for others and
an understanding heart for the
needs of others.
The THIRD principle is that our
fellowship in Christ is deepened.
In 1 Peter 4:12-13 we read, “Be
loved, think it not strange con
cerning the fiery trial which is to
try you, as though some strange
thing happened unto you; but re
joice, inasmuch as ye are par
takers of Christ’s sufferings.” We
share His suffering and so share
His fellowship.
Why thei? Because God loves
us. He is not punishing, but puri
fying, pruning us for service that
we may share in the fellowship
of the suffering of Christ.
