On Grading
(USDA News Release)
The auctioneer’s chant will a
gain be heard beginning July 29
as flue-cured tobacco markets in
Georgia and Florida open for
sales of the 1964 crop.
Working ahead of the auction
eers will be a team of 122 to
bacco inspectors of the U. S. De
partment of Agriculture’s Mar
keting Service. It is the job of a
federal inspector to examine
each lot, or basket, of tobacco
shortly before a tobacco sale
starts.
The inspector grades the tobac
co according to official U. S.
Standards. He enters the grade,
date, and his initials on the bas
ket ticket. This then becomes the
certificate of grade for that lot
of tobacco.
Official grades for flue-cured
tobacco this season, except for
the addition of three grades and
minor changes in specifications
for a few other grades, will be the
same as last season, according to
Walter L. Bradsher, flue-cured
district supervisor of the Agricul
tural Marketing Service’s Tobac
co Division at Raleigh, N. C.
The grades were revised last
year to place more emphasis on
maturity as a quality factor and
to describe more accurately the
quality of every lot of tobacco of
fered for inspection. In the re
vision, the number of grades was
reduced from 173 to 157. The

Broome Will Fight Hard
to Save Small County
Representation
If elected representative from Brantley
County, I will do my best to save the small
counties of Georgia from losing their repre
sentation in the legislature.
The January session of the legislature has
been ordered by a district federal court to
reapportion the lower house of the legislature
according to population.
Reapportionment would mean that Brant
ley County, along with many other small
counties, would lose its representative. The
state would be apportioned according to popu
lation, with at least 20,000 people in each dis
trict.
Brantley County with about 6,000 popu
lation would have to be the tail to the kite of
some larger adjoining county, possibly two
other counties.
If elected representative, I will never vote
for any plan to abolish our right to a repre-
sentative in the legislature.
The people of Brantley County should
elect the best man fitted to make the fight to
keep our representative.
three grades added this season—
XSKL, XsKF,and XSKV — make
the total number 160.

PRACTICAL FAMILY LIVING
BY LUCILLE HIGGINBOTHAM

Me, shampoo my living room
carpet? Yes, you can shampoo
your living room, dining room,
bedroom, hall or any other room
carpet. It is easy, too, when you
nave the right equipment.
Many floor polishers are also
shampooers or they can be adap
ted for shampooing by the addi
tion of an attachment. The appli
ance looks rather like a vacuum
cleaner but it has a container for
the shampoo and a special attach
ment dispensing it in the form of
foam.
The first thing to do is to move
out all the furniture which can
be moved. That which must re
main should have white cardboard
or aluminum foil placed under the
legs to prevent rusting. The next
step is to vacuum thoroughly.

This is an important part of the
process.
Any good rug shampoo may be
used. Follow the instructions with
it for diluting. Generally, the pro
portions are one cup of shampoo
to eight cups of warm water.
Pour the diluted shampoo into
the container on the shampooer
after you have attached the rug
cleaner.
Start in a corner of the room
and work toward a door so you
won’t have to walk on the clean
carpet any more than absolutely
necessary. Run the shampooer
back and forth over an area
about three feet square. Foam is
spread over the carpet in a thick
layer. You do not have to remove
it. It will soon disappear. As you
move from one three-foot area to
another, overlap just a little so
you will be sure to cover every
bit of carpet.
If the carpet has a pile which
needs it, you may run the floor
tool of your vacuum cleaner over
it as you finish shampooing an
area. In most cases this is not
necessary.
When you have finished the en
tire carpet, let it dry without
disturbing it any more than you
must. Drying time will vary from
about three hours to overnight de
pending on the fiber.
When it is completely dry, va
cuum again. This is an important
step because the shampooing has
brought soil to the surface and
vacuuming will remove it, In
fact, frequent vacuuming for the
first week after shampooing im
proves the appearance of the car
pet.
It is an easy job and it is fun
to do. If you have a shampooer
don’t hesitate to use it for a great
deal of satisfaction and very clean
carpets. — By Doris Oglesby,

ment, University of Georgia, Co

KINDNESS HELPS
Kindness is important, but nev

RURAL RECREATION
Georgia forest landowners have
a stake in developing recreational
facilities for an increasing popu
lation, say foresters with the Co
operative Extension Service.
