A FOOD PLAN
Wise planning for nutrition is a
most important part of the food
budget, according to Mrs. Rita
Waters, nutritionist with the Co

adds that any good food plan
should include sufficient foods
from each of the basic four food
groups — dairy foods, meat, vege

Handbook Tells How
To Control Insects
Annual losses caused by insects
that attack rice in storage are
estimated to be about one and
one-half percent of the total value
of the rice crop.
This does not take into consid
eration the cost of prevention and
any damage to the reputation of
a milling company if its well
established brands of products are
found to be contaminated by the
presence of insects.
Methods of preventing losses
caused by insect infestations of
stored rice are described in a
handbook recently released by the
U. S. Department of Agriculture.
“Controlling Insect Pests of
Stored Rice,” prepared by USDA
marketing researchers, describes
the insects that may infest stored
rice. It gives methods of control
ling them in bins, mills, and ware
houses.
In addition to discussing new
and efficient methods of fumigat
ing rice, the handbook brings up
to date other information on the
subject, and presents it in con
venient form.
Information in the handbook can
help bring more and better qua
lity rice to consumers. The sav
ings realized from reduced spoil
age of rice during marketing may
be reflected in better prices for
consumers, the USDA marketing
researchers said.
Single copies of “Controlling
Insect Pests of Stored Rice,” Ag
riculture Handbook No. 129, may
be obtained from the Office of
Information, U. S. Department of
Agriculture, Washington D. C

Broome Will Fight Hard
to Save Small County
Representation
If elected representative from Brantley
County, I will do my best to save the small
counties of Georgia from losing their repre
sentation in the legislature.
The January session of the legislature has
been ordered by a district federal court to
reapportion the lower house of the legislature
according to population.
Reapportionment would mean that Brant
ley County, along with many other small
counties, would lose its representative. The
state would be apportioned according to popu
lation, with at least 20,000 people in each dis
trict.
Brantley County with about 6,000 popu
lation would have to be the tail to the kite of
some larger adjoining county, possibly two
other counties.
If elected representative, I will never vote
for any plan to abolish our right to a repre-
sentative in the legislature.
The people of Brantley County should
elect the best man fitted to make the fight to
keep our representative.
