Highway Litter
Costs Taxpayers
Over SIOO Million
NEW YORK, N. Y. — This
year's highway litter, if laid end
to end, would create the world’s
record traffic jam.
In fact, it would bring all traf
fic to a dead stop on the preferr
ed 3,000-mile route between New
York and San Francisco, reports
Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the
national anti-litter organization.
KAB says the rubbish that will
be dumped on streets and high
ways in 1964 if concentrated would
bury the transcontinental route a
foot deep in discarded wrappers

KAB based its graphic picture
of the national “litter harvest”
on an estimate from the U. S.
Bureau of Public Roads, that up
to 20 million cubic yards of litter
will be dumped this year on the
nation’s streets and highways.
“It will cost taxpayers over a
hundred million dollars to clean
up the highway mess this year,”
said Allen H. Seed, Jr., executive
vice president of KAB. “And the
cleanup won’t be permanent! The
only real solution is education.

Cellulose is one of man’s most useful raw
materials, and you consume enormous quan
tities of it. Cellulose is Rayonier’s business.
Here in the Southeast, for example, we account
for over 20% of U.S. output of this versatile
product.
Everybody? Yes indeed! For example: it’s
used to make thousands of miles of fabrics and
millions of tons of tire cord, cellophane, sau
sage casing, photo film, plastics, cigaret filters
... and nearly 6,000 other products.

Benefit Assistance
State Senatorial Candidate Ros
coe Emory Dean, Jr. of Jesup
said today there is a public school
poem which begins: “Grow Old
Along With Me; The Best Is Yet
To Be.”
Dean stated that the poem con
tained beautiful sentiment, full of
hope and fulfillment. And it can
be true. But you will not find ag
ing people who believe it unless
they have solid assurance of a
guaranteed income, comfortable
and cheerful housing, and ade
quate medical care assistance.
The State of Georgia and the
federal government provide life
saving assistance for more than
100,000 Senior Citizens who helped
to build this great state. And
those who receive assistance
checks should NEVER feel that
this is charity. It is NOT. It is
simply the return of a small por
tion of the taxes they have been
paying for a long time. Old age
assistance should be viewed in
this light by both the governments
which provide it and the deserv-

ing people who receive it.
Too many of our Senior Citizens
are retired when their experience,
knowledge and dedication are the
biggest assets their employers
could hope to have. Adjustment
to forced retirement is difficult
for many men and women —
sometimes heartbreaking. Even a
parttime employment of these
productive cititzens could ease
that shock and pay off for the
employer.
Our state government has a
Commission on Aging that should
be better financed so that pro
grams and projects could be de
veloped for our people of the Gold
en Age — 60 and older. Medical
science has worked miracles in
the past century and put more
: years into life for the American
people. Now it is up to us and
our government — to put more
life into tne years.

CLOTHES WRINKLED?
Wrinkled clothes in the dryer
may be caused by over-drying.
Miss Doris Oglesby, head of the
Extension Service home improve
ment department, says over-dry
ing is sometimes a result of set
ting the control for too long a
period. And it may be due to
articles of widely varying weights
having been dried together.
What’s new in Florida and Georgia?
Just to keep pace with world demand for
cellulose, Rayonier is embarked on another
big expansion program. A good deal of money
is earmarked for work at Jesup and Fernan
dina Beach just to keep the company in strong
competitive positions.
Take away the Rayonier cellulose?
You could almost as easily take away those
2-million acres of tree farms in the U. S. A.
and Canada — where it all starts!

Questions and Answers
from the Brantley County
Department or Family
And Children Services
By Mrs. Leila Turner,
Director
1. Is Public Assistance availa
ble to a mother and her chil
dren who live in home of a rel
ative and have no other means
of support?
Public Assistance may be availa
ble to provide the basic neces
sities for the children and a par
ent or relative caretaker if need
ed. The children can receive pub
lic assistance while living in the
home of a relative if they are
otherwise eligible and if there is
no close relative who is capable
of providing for them. The place
of residence in this instance, is
not part of the eligibility criter
ia.
2. If an absent father refuses to
pay child support and the chil
dren are in need can anything be
done by the Department of Fam
ily and Children Services?
The children may be eligible
for Public Assistance. If they
meet all eligibility requirements
and are found to be in need such
assistance will be granted. How
ever, the appropriate law enfor
cement agency must be notified
of the fact that the father is not
meeting his support obligations to
his children. In addition, full co
operation in efforts to obtain child
support from the father would be
necessary.
3. Are there any disability bene
fits for people who are disabled
but not bedfast? Neither Social
Security disability payments nor
the Department of Family and
Children Services' Aid to the per
manently and totally disabled
program requires that the reci
pient be bedfast?
If the disabled person has work-
ed for some time under Social Se
curity he might be eligible for
benefits from this source. If how
ever that person is in urgent
need and otherwise eligible the
Department of Family and Child
ren Services may be able to help
until eligibility for Social Secur
ity is determined.

Chicken is always a bargain
in good eating. Low cost com
bined with high nutritional
appearance of chicken on the
value warrants the frequent
menu.
Chicken is also a good sour
ce of the B complex — niacin,
thiamine and riboflavin.
Broilers have less fat than
most meats so the meat is also
lower in calories. A three
ounce serving of boneless meat
has about 115 calories.
The versatility of chicken
helps make meal planning
easy. Chicken goes well with
most fruits and vegetables in
color, flavor and texture. Ser
ve a watery vegetable with
combination dishes of chicken
and a starchy food.
The method of preparation
is unlimited but best results
are obtained when the method
of cooking is suited to the bird.
Dry heat methods such as
broiling, frying and roasting
should be used with young,
tender chicken. To tenderize
older birds, a braising or stew
ing cooking method is best.
Chicken is delicious prepar
ed in the familiar native ways
such as southern fried, pot pie
or barbecued. To make it ex
citingly different, add a fore

chicken and spices, herbs, nuts
or fruits bring visions of far
