You Are Entitled to Know the Truth —
Roscoe Dean Jr. is a candidate for the State Senate. Some people may not know the background of this candidate. I feel it is my
duty to acquaint you with the true facts because — I AM Roscoe Dean Jr.
Below I am presenting, on the left under the words, "CHARGE" the exact words of the charges made against me by an unidenti
fied, unsigned, uncertain group which called itself "Citizens Interested in Good Government." This message from Ghosts for Good
Government appeared in the Camden, Charlton and Bacon County papers last week. The charges failed to appear in your paper, so I
am printing the charges and my answer to the charges in your paper in case their so-called "Citizens Committee" publishes any
statements concerning these charges. Now let me answer these false and ridiculous statements.
"Roscoe has never farmed or worked turpentine
in his life. He owns no land and pays no taxes only
on an automobile. He has not lived in this district
for ten years, and until April 1, 1964, he maintained
an apartment at 1414 Euclid Avenue, N. E., Atlanta,
Georgia, telephone number 373-3600. He has never
held any responsible position. He has no income and
is supported entirely by his family. (This advertise
ment written and paid for by citizens interested in
good government.)"
"A Doctorate degree is the highest possible de
gree which any school can bestow on a student. It
takes many years of work to earn this degree and
there are very few people in Georgia with this hon
or. Many school teachers go to school for years to
obtain a Masters Degree, and much more study is
required to earn a Doctorate. None of the accedited
schools in Georgia, including Mercer University,
Emory University or the University of Georgia,
gives a 'Doctor of Jurisprudence' degree, since
there is no such degree. Roscoe obtained this de
gree in one year from an unaccredited school in
Atlanta and it is not recognized by any accredited
school. Roscoe is not a lawyer, since he has never
passed the State Bar Examination, although he took
it again in 1964, after he began campaigning for the
State Senate. Roscoe flunked out of the University
of Georgia Law School. (This advertisement writ
ten and paid for by citizens interested in good gov
ernment.)"
(This advertisement written and paid for by ROSCOE EMORY DEAN JR., who will not
hide behind a so-called 'Citizens Committee' or fail to sign his name.)
This Time the REAL Truth
THE CHARGE:
THE CHARGE:
In their panic, this so-called "Citizens Committee" failed to check
the official records of the U. S. Agriculture Stabilization and Con
servation Office of Wayne County. This is the office which adminis
ters the tobacco acreage allotment program. The office is located at
105 Ty Ty Street, Jesup, Ga. The telephone number is 427-2502.
Their official records show that I, Roscoe Dean Jr., receive 25 per
cent of the profits from a tobacco allotment of 5.35 acres. I have
also done the hard work that made the profits. I have planted and
harvested tobacco, corn and cotton. The so-called "Citizens Commit
tee" also failed to check the official records of The American Tur
pentine Farmers Association Cooperative. This is the cooperative
which administers the price support program of the Commodity
Credit Corporation for turpentine farmers who are eligible members.
The Cooperative office is located at 1204 North Patterson Street,
Valdosta, Ga. The telephone number is 242-6785.
Their official records show that I, Roscoe Dean Jr., am a turpen
tine operator recognized by the federal government. I have also
hauled the gum, wrestled the barrels, run the commissary, trans
ported the labor and paid off the men. I work hard on the land of
my parents so that one day I will own land of my own. I pay several
kinds of taxes, a number of them provable from the files of The In
ternal Revenue Service.
I was born, have lived and worked in the district most of my life.
Os course, I had to spend some time away at college because there
is no college anywhere in the district. But I was home on weekends
and in the summer months, working in tobacco and turpentine. I
have also worked in several election campaigns that covered the
counties that make up the Sixth Senatorial District. I have voted in
every primary election in my county since age 18.
I was registered to vote in Athens when attending the University
of Ga. After being informed that I was a legal resident of Wayne
County (even though attending college in Athens) and that my name
was still on the Wayne County voters list, I did not and never did
vote in Athens, although my name appeared on their voters list. I
have voted in Wayne County all my life.
I do not maintain an apartment in Atlanta. I do go to Atlanta one
weekend of each month to serve my country by training in the
Georgia Air National Guard at Dobbins Air Force Base. I rent a
room in Atlanta for the two days of military training each month.
I pay five dollars a day for the room.
For the so-called "Citizens Committee's" benefit, it is not at 1414
Euclid Avenue N. E., but the correct address is 2025 Peachtree Road,
Room 305, Atlanta, Ga. The telephone number is 875-6700. I have
rented the room for nine months on every third weekend when I
was in Atlanta for guard training.
The RESPONSIBLE positions I have held or am now holding in
clude a job with General Motors Corporation Finance Division; Edi
tor of the Citizens Sentinel of the Georgia Air National Guard; Tur
pentine Operator and Tobacco Farmer; Christmas Tree Farmer; Di
rector of Youth in behalf of Governor Herman Talmadge; Owner
and Operator of a Public Relations Firm.
How well I know that it takes long, hard years to obtain a Doctorate
Degree. I worked hard for my Doctorate Degree for several years
and many long hours and that is one reason I am proud of it. I earned
it from the John Marshall University located at 105 Forrest Avenue
N. E., Atlanta, Ga. John Marshall University is located across from
the Emory Dental School. The telephone number of the university is
523-8580.
John Marshall University has graduated many distinguished law
yers, judges, members of the Georgia Legislature and sons of Con
gressmen. This University's credits are accepted by NORTH GEOR
GIA COLLEGE, A BRANCH OF OUR STATE UNIVERSITY, LA
GRANGE COLLEGE, A FINE METHODIST COLLEGE; OGLE
THORPE UNIVERSITY IN ATLANTA, and others if you care to
check.
I am not a rich man's son. I had to work hard during the day and
go to law school at night. My record at John Marshall University
shows that I maintained an "A" average. I am NOT running for the
state senate as a lawyer and have made no claims of being oae. I do
however have thorough legal training and hold the degree of Doctor
of Jurisprudence. I am proud of my doctorate degree and my legal
training.
I have taken the BAR EXAM ONE TIME. This can be checked
easily by calling Mr. King, clerk of the State Board of Bar Examiners,
1045 Hurt Building, Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. King's telephone number
is 522-7420.
No, I did not graduate from the University of Georgia Law School.
I graduated from the University of Georgia Journalism School in
Athens, Ga. on August 18, 1960 with a C-plus average. This can be
checked easily by calling Mr. Walter Danner, Registrar of the Uni
versity of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Mr. Danner's telephone num
ber is 543-2933.1 am proud of my University of Georgia record.
