What Must I Do
To Be Lost?
Nothing! Absolutely nothing!
When Adam accepted from his
wife the proffered fruit of the
garden, of which God had com
manded thot they should not eat,
he placed upon each and everyone
of us the burden of sin. God had
created Adam and Eve in the like
ness of Himself, perfect and with
out sin, but with the freedom to
make a choice between obedience
and disobedience. When the temp
tation presented itself their love
for God was not as strong as
their desire to taste the unknown.
By disobeying God, Adam was
placed in the position of know
ing good and evil, but without the
power to do good until God made
provision for Him.
Since Adam is the father of all

mankind we, as his children, were
bom in his image — not God’s —
and therefore bear in our nature
all the evil of Satan himself.
Psalm 51:5. We do not need to do
anything to be lost. We are al
ready lost. What does Scripture
have to say? Romans 3:23 “For
all have sinned, and come short of
the glory of God.” Isaiah 64:6
“But we are all as an unclean
thing, and all our righteousnesses
are as filthy rags; and we all do
fade as a leaf; and our iniquities,
like the wind, have taken us
away.”
Yes, even from birth we find
the nature of Adam exerting it
self. The first cry of a newborn
baby is made in anger and frus
tration that he must learn to
breath for himself. We do not
need to teach a child to lie —

we must teach him to tell the
truth. We need to be taught to
live and share with one another,
for we are inherently selfish.
Being lost is a dreadful thing.
Almost all of us have at one time
or another been physically lost or
have known the horror of having
a child missing for a few hours.
This lostness is a physical sepa
ration from those we love. Spirit
ual lostness is being separated
from God. Psalm 66:18 “If I re
gard iniquity in my heart, the
Lord will not hear me.” Isaiah
59:2 “But your iniquities have
separated between you and your
God, and your sins have hid his
face from you, that he will not
hear.”
The only desire of a loving
father whose child has been lost
is that he may be safely returned
to him. So it is with God who
created us in the very beginning
that He might have fellowship
with us. He loved Adam and Eve,
even though they had sinned, and
so in order that they might not
live forever separated from God,
He made provision for them and
for us. For them, He made the
first sacrifice by the slaying of an
animal and the shedding of its
blood in order to provide a skin
covering for their nakedness. Gen
esis 3:21. And then He sent them
forth from the Garden of Eden in
order that they might be prevent-

Socialism on a Grand Scale
Everybody knows that the federal govern
ment is big business. Not so well known is
the incredible extent to which the government
has entered business as owner and operator.
According to Senator Beall of Maryland,
Uncle Sam runs nearly 19,000 commercial and
industrial business that are in direct competi
tion with private concerns. The list has an
almost bewildering variety — coffee-roasting
plants, rum distilleries, printing and power
plants, the manufacture of medical and den
tal equipment, plastic-laminating and so on.
He even operates movie theaters and ice
cream plants.
Taxpaying private enterprise — the kind
of enterprise we are supposed to be encour
aging — pays for this. So do the general tax
payers, for government businesses, in addition
to being tax-free, commonly operate at a loss.
Socialism is a mighty expensive luxury.
As the Citizens Public Expenditure Survey
puts it, “Uncle Sam’s sole business is to govern
and he has no business being in any other
business. If we really want to spur the economy
we’ll get the government out of commercial
business as swiftly as possible and let compe
titive taxpaying enterprise do the needed jobs.
ed from eating of the Tree of Life
and so live forever in their sin.
What a blessing that was for
both them and us. How terrible
it would be if we, knowing all
these things — knowing that we
are lost, were left without any
hope of redemption.
We can rejoice, however, be
cause by the shedding of the blood
of the animal for Adam, God was
showing that He would not leave
man in his sins, but would pro
vide a fitting sacrifice in the per
son of His Son. Hebrews 9:22
“And almost all things are by
the law purged with blood; and
without shedding of blood is no
remission.” And then we have
Christ speaking at the Last Sup
per, “For this is my blood of the
new testament, which is shed for
many for the remission of sins.”
Matthew 26:28
Paul gives us these words in
Romans 5:18. “Therefore, as by
the offence of one (Adam) judg
ment came upon all men to con
demnation; even so by the right
eousness of one (Jesus Christ)
the free gift came upon all men
unto justification of life. Romans
5:8 “But God commendeth his
love toward us, in that, while we
were yet sinners, Christ died for
us.”
We do not need to do anything
at all to be lost, but we do need
to do one thing to be saved and ।
that is found in Romans 10:9,
“That if thou shalt confess with
thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and
shalt believe in thine heart that
God hath raised him from the
dead, thou shalt be saved.”

BEEF IS BEEF?

Youthful drivers in 1963 had the
worst record of any age group
in the United States. Young men
and women under age 25 repre
sent only about 15 per cent of
the nation’s licensed drivers, yet
they were involved in more than
29 per cent of all fatal accidents
and in more than 26 per cent of
all non-fatal accidents.
Motorists in 1963 raced down
the nation’s highways to a new,
all-time auto death record which
for the first time exceeded 42,-
000 fatalities. This tragic toll top
ped the figure of nearly 40,000
persons killed in 1941 —a record
high which stood for twenty years
— and even surpassed the new
record of 40,500 deaths establish
ed in 1962.
