ROSCOE DEAN
Dean Is for Local
Self-government
And Lower Taxes
State Senatorial Candidate Ros
coe Emory Dean Jr. of Jesup de
clared today that the claws of
centralized government are reach
ing down from Washington and
Atlanta and raking in more and
more of the rights and powers of
local government — this must be
stopped immediately.
We have been taught self-re
liance. Our parents and teachers
taught it when we were young.
Growing older, we learned it by
nigged experience gained in the
“University of Hard Knocks.”

The Gold Medallion Home takes the title
every time with modern flameless electr c
heating, cooling, cooking, water heating.
It gets all of the attention. Friends can’t
stay away. And proud owners just can’t
help showing it off.
There’s more time, of course, to be a
gracious hostess when you enjoy total
electric living. Your houseful of electric
servants sees to that. And with a flame
less electric heating system, your house
stands ready for white-glove inspection.
A Gold Medallion home features Full
Housepower Wiring which means suffi
cient circuits, switches and outlets.
There’s also Light for Living, planned
to give proper illumination as well as
additional beauty to your home.
Sound expensive? It isn’t. A special low
rate is available for total-electric cus
tomers. And with budget billing, your
electric bill is the same every month.
GEORGIA POWER COMPANY
Self-reliance means self-govern
ment. And the self-governed are
the best governed. The govern
ment closest to the people is the
safest government.
It is foolish and dangerous for
anyone to suggest or propose that
ANY part of the powers of self
govenment that belong to our city
councilmen and county commis
sioners should be denied or given
up to Atlanta or Washington. The
people on the local level know
local problems best and they
should have the right to solve
them on the local level.
Our counties and cities are our
last strongholds of freedom. We
must fight to keep them strong
and absolutely free. We must fight
for the rights that make this
country great. Free speech . . .
Freedom of worship . . . Free en
) terprise . . . Individual Liberty
। and Freedom . . . Self-Reliance
. . . Local Self-Government.
We do not intend to stand by
and let one foot of county lines
be changed and I am fighting for
fair and full representation for
you in the state legislature and
under the capital dome.
When I am your NEW STATE
SENATOR, I shall work endless
ly for 100 per cent pure home
rule and local self-government.
I mean the kind of home rule and
local self-government that will
let our county commissioners and
city councilmen pass laws to
govern local affairs. Then we will
not have to run to the legislature
and the Governor’s Office to get
local bills passed. We will be
FREE MEN, REALLY FREE
MEN.
I ask your vote and influence.
I shall justify your confidence by
working fulltime to bring about
lower taxes by state economy and
local control of local affairs —
the real honest-to-goodness local
self government. I WILL NOT BE
A YES MAN. (Adv.)

Armadillo Is
Killed in Pierce
Ronnie Aaron Dixon, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Foster Dixon of Black
shear, killed an Armadillo at their
home on Route 2, on Monday
night.
The incident occurred when the
dogs began barking about 10:30
P. M. When the Dixon’s went out
side to check, the dogs ran what
they thought was an opossum, out
from under the grapevine, through
the yard and across the road into
the woods.
Ronnie got his gun and followed
the dogs into the woods. When he
approached the unknown object,
it was curled up, and in the dark
with just a flash light, looked like
a snake coiled up. He thought that
the possum had gotten away and
the dogs had run upon a snake.
When Ronnie shot Hie object, it
uncurled, and they knew it
wasn’t a snake but still couldn’t
tell what it was. After taking it
back to the house on a shovel to
a light, the object was still un
known. After the Dixon’s daugh
ter, Connie, got her Science book,
it revealed the identity of an Ar
madillo.
The Armadillo, a variety of
burrowing mammal species, are
found throughout South America
and north to Texas. The Texas
Armadillo is unique for always
producing quadruplets of identical
sex.
So, be on the look out for other
Armadillos, if this was one of the
Texas female species, there are
more to be found.
Food Enrichment
The term “enrichment” on
packages of grain foods means
that the important B vitamins and
minerals have been restored. Ac
cording to nutritionists with the
Cooperative Extension Service,
these are thiamine, riboflavin, ni
acin, and minerals that are lost
when the bran and germ are re
moved from the kernel during the
milling process.

A CHILD-PROOF
MEDICINE CHEST
A medicine cabinet with a built
in latch that would foil young
children, yet be easy for adults
to operate.
That, says Miss Lucile Higgin
botham. head of the Cooperative
Extension Service health depart
ment at the University of Georgia,
is what health authorities decid
ed would be the best solution to
the alarming number of drug
poisonings.
And now, after a lot of research
and testing, manufacturers have
come out with a child-proof medi
cine cabinet.
After hundreds of designs for
safety latches came off the
drawing boards and scores were
produced and tested, two were
finally accepted, according to
Miss Higginbotham. One is for a
sliding door, the other for a
swinging door.
On the sliding door, Miss Hig
ginbotham explained, the knob
must be pushed in and at the
same time given a half turn to

On the swinging door, the lock
has three buttons —two placed
an adult’s hand span away from
each other, and one in the middle.
All three buttons must be pushed
at the same time before the door
will open.
In actual tests, the new latches
have proved rather difficult for
young children. In one experi
ment, the tested opened the cabi
net door while groups of 15 to 20
children, age two to six looked on.
Then each child was told he
would be rewarded is he could
open the door.
Only after four demonstrations,
and four tries, did any child learn
to open the door. Then only three
children learned to open the slid
ing door. On the swing type door,
only children clever enough to

The sliding door gave them
even more trouble. Miss Higgin-1

ordination required to depress I
and turn the buttons at the same
time is usually beyond a young
child’s capabilities. ,
The Extension health specialist [
said the cabinets with the safety i
latches are being sold by ten i
manufacturers who produce more S
than 70 percent of all medicine (
cabinets in the United States. She r
said the extra cost is expected to c

WHERE TO BUILD?
In selecting a building site for
