How can I KNOW that I will
go to Heaven when I die?
One of the saddest statements
that I have ever heard from
anyone is, “I HOPE I’m a Chris
tian. I HOPE that I ant going to
Heaven when I die.” You say,
“But I don’t really know. So I
can only hope.”
But you CAN know. “These
things have I written unto you
that believe on the name of the
Son of God that ye may know
that ye have eternal life, and that
ye may believe on the name of
the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13.
When we substitute the word
‘hope’ for the word ‘know’ we are
making God a liar. There is one
and only one condition by which
we are privileged to enter heaven
and that is through our belief in
the Lord Jesus Christ. “Believe
on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou
shalt be saved.” Acts 16:31.
Salvation is being saved from
Hell and saved for Heaven.
There can be nothing plainer than
the statement above. Salvation is
not of works lest any man should
boast. “For by grace are ye
saved through faith; and that not
of yourselves; it is the gift of
God; not of works, lest any man
should boast.” Ephesians 2:8,9.
So the fact that you have not done
enough for the Lord is not going
to keep you out of Heaven. Re
member the thief on the.cross?
One of them reviled Christ but
the other said, “Lord, remember
me when thou comest into thy
kingdom.” Jesus answered, "This
day shalt thou be with me in
Paradise.” Did the thief have
time to do anything in the way
of service for Christ? Os course
not. He scarcely had time to
state his belief in Christ as Lord.
Then someone says, “But I am
not worthy of heaven. I commit
sins every day that may keep me
out of heaven. God may not for
give me.” Again let me say that
you are making God a liar. Cer
tainly none of us are worthy.
Certainly we all sin, but if God
means what He says then we
CANNOT be saved today and lost
tomorrow. What a miserable ex
istence that would be! Let me
ask you this question. Suppose
one of your children, a beloved
son perhaps, committed a murder
and was condemned to life im
prisonment. Would that mean that
he was no longer a member of
your family? Would he cease to
.bear your name and forfeit your
love? Os course not. As a loving
parent your love would probably
be deepened by his need.
If we as earthly parents react
in such a manner, how much
more would our Heavenly Father.
Let me give you one Scripture.
“If we confess our sins, He is
faithful and just to forgive us
our sins, and to cleanse us from
all unrighteousness. If we say we
have not sinned, we make him a
liar and his Word is not in us.”
1 John 1:9, 10.
Does this mean then that we
have a license to live as we
please and do anything we wish,
expecting Christ to forgive us?
As Paul says, God forbid. A
Christian may fall into tempta
tion and sin, but He does not live
in sin. Let me quote from a mod
ern translation of 1 John 3:4,6.
“But those who keep on sinning
are against God, for every sin
is done against the will of God.
So if we stay close to Him, obe
dient to Him, we won’t be sinning
either; but those who keep on
sinning should realize this: they
sin because they have never real
ly known Him and become His.”
Jesus gives us these comforting
words just before His return to
heaven. “Let not your heart be
troubled; ye believe in God, be
lieve also in me, In my Father’s
house are many mansions; if it
were not so, I would haye told
you. I go to prepare a place for
you.”
Without offering one piece of
work or service — knowing that
I have committed many sins both
of omission and commission —
yet I can say with all assurance
that I shall go immediately to be
with my Lord when I die. I can
say joyfully with Paul, “For I
KNOW whom I have believed, and
am persuaded that He is able
to keep that which I have com
mitted unto him against that day”
And “I am persuaded, that neither
death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor powers, nor
things to come, nor height nor
depth, nor any other creature,
shall be able to separate us from
the love ot God which is in Christ
Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8: 38,
139. What a wonderful salvation
we have!
