CHRISTMAS TREES
An opinion poll was conducted
at the recent Southeastern Fair
in Atlanta to see which of four
Christmas trees was the most
popular. According to Extension
Service Forester B. R. Murray,
approximately 600 people partici
pated. Fifty-one percent said they
preferred the white pine. Twen
ty-five percent liked the Arizona
cypress, 14 percent the tinted red
cedar, and 10 percent the untint
ed redcedar.
HOW SCHOOLING HELPS
The better an individual’s edu
cation, the more he produces, the
more he buys and consumes, the
more he reads, the more active
he is in civic and national af
fairs, the higher his standard of
living.
Seedling Care
The Georgia Forestry Com
mission wiH sell 50 million
tree seedlings for planting
this season, and the state’s
forest industries will plant
additional miUions which they
have grown in their nurseries.
The fate of many of these
seedlings, said George D.
Walker, Cooperative Exten
sion Service forester at the
University of Georgia, is not
too encouraging.
Unless planters use care in
handling the young trees,
many of them will die. For
the thousands of Georgians
who will be planting seedlings
this winter, Mr. Walker said
he could think of no better
advice than “be careful with
those roots.”
He explained that tree seed
lings have fine hair roots that
are easily damaged or killed
if allowed to dry out. “Act
ually,” he continued, “only
a few minutes exposure to
sun and wind can do this
damage.
Mr. Walker said improper
handling is considered the
major cause of poor
seedling survival, and added
that poor storage accounts
for a large portion of the
loss.
