Children's
Dental
Health
My husband and I both have
had decay problems since early
childhood. Now, our two children
also have many cavities. What
causes teeth to decay? Can "soft"
teeth be inherited?
Sugar is the major cause of
tooth decay. Bacteria always pre
sent in our mouths act on sugar
to produce acids. These acids at
tack the teeth and eventually
cause decay.
Nibbling on sweets throughout
the day is especially bad for teeth.
By constant nibbling, you keep
your teeth bathed in acid. If you
do eat sweets, it is better to eat
whatever quantity you want all at
one time. Then brush your teeth
immediately, to remove as much
of the sugar as possible before
it is turned to acid.
As to the second part of your
question, scientists know that
there is some genetic influence
in decay, but it is incorrect to des
cribe teeth as “hard” or “soft.”
Much decay occurs between the
teeth. In addition, there are areas
of the teeth, especially the back
teeth, that are particularly prone
to decay. These are the pits and
grooves which are found on the
top, or chewing surface, of the
teeth. These pits and grooves art
formed during development of
the teeth.
When a tooth is forming in the
jawbone, it begins to calcify at
several separate points. These
calcifying areas finally meet and
fuse, forming the hardened crown.
Jhe enamel covering is thickest
on the biting surface of the tooth,
is thinner in the groves and some
times is completely missing in
the deep pits. It is in these last,
less protected areas that decay is
likely to occur. And this is where
genetic factors come in; the pat
tern of the calcifying process may
well be inherited.
Therefore, in some people these
calcifying areas may form a hard
enamel covering even in the pits
and grooves, while in others the
enamel may be thinner. But what
ever the enamel formation of the
teeth, decay will occur if the
teeth are subjected to attacks
from acids produced as a result
of eating sweets.
Os course, a most important
preventive measure is always to
brush your teeth immediately af
ter eating. If this is not pos
sible, rinse your mouth thorough
ly with water. And, remember,
brush down on the upper teeth
and up on the lower teeth. This is
important in pushing the food
particles out of the spaces be
tween the teeth, away from the
gums.
My pediatrician says I should
take my 3-year-old son to the
dentist. However, he doesn't seem
to have any cavities, so I wonder
if this is necessary?
Dental authorities agree that
the child should make his first
visit to the dentist at about age
2% or 3. At this time, he has all
of his deciduous (“baby”) teeth,
and the dentist can check early
for any minute sign of decay or
any malformation which might
lead to orthodontic problems
when the child is older.
The fact that your child doe r
not “seem to have any cavities”
does not mean that some decay
may not be present. In fact, the
American Dental Association has
found that dental patients under
4 years of age have an average
ff three teeth needing fillings.
When a child is exposed tc
tories existing and potential
tourist attractions, local events
having tourist significance, and
tourism facilities.
An event was discussed
which is to be one of the
highlights of the year in the
Commission’s roster of acti
vities. It was determined that
an annual meeting would be
held which would last about
one-half day and which would
have a principal speaker, a
business session, and an infor
mal luncheon. Civic and gov
ernmental leaders and the
public would be invited.
It is expected that the e
vent will occur during the
first or second week in Mav
A committee consisting of
O’Neal Douglas of Waycross
Ben Mills of Fitzgerald, and
J. O. Echols of Patterson was
appointed to seek a speaker
nd to make any other arrange
ments which are needed.
O’Neal Douglas was welcom
ed as a new member of th®
Commission. He w®s appointed

routine treatment at an earh

which many adults have.so lon
associated wity dental treatment
The importance of gpod care
for the primary or “babv”. teeth
cannot be overemphasized, A
child needs his primary teeth, as
he does his permanent ones, for
chewing, for speaking and for ap
pearance. Also, these first teeth
hold the space for the permanent
teeth to come.
My 14-year-old son has been
told by his dentist that he has 12
cavities, which the dentist plans
to fill. Is there anything my child
ren can do to keep from having
so much tooth decc-y?
There are simple rules which,
if followed faithfully, can help to
reduce decay. These are:
1. Cut down on sweets, especi
ally between meals.
2. Brush your teeth immediately
after eating (snacks as well as
regular meals.) When this is not
possible, rinse your mouth thor
oughly with water.
3. Have regular dental check
ups. This enables the dentist to
discover decay and other prob
lems at an early stage. Just as
with other diseases, early treat
ment of dental disease is easier
and more likely to be effective.
4. Fluoridation of community
water supplies greatly reduces de
cay. Where water supplies are
not fluoridated, dentists may sug
gest applying fluoride directly to
children’s teeth.

Refund Option
Savings Bond Chairman for
Pierce County, H. M. Moody this
week reminded taxpayers that
the Treasury Department will

funds in U. S. Savings Bonds.
“When a taxpayer elects to take
his refund in Series E Bonds,”
Mr. Moody said, “his money goes
to work immediately on two jobs.
It begins to build his financial se

“Taxpayers taking their 1963 re
funds in Savings Bonds accounted
for over sl9 million in bond sales,
and acquired more than 240,000
individual bonds,” Mr. Moody
commented.
“When you check the Savings
