Six Regional
Youth Centers
Being Planned
A proposed system of Regional
Youth Development Centers de
signed to end the practice of keep
ing children in jail was the sub
ject of lengthy discussion at the
January meeting of the State
Board for Children and Youth.
Mrs. Bruce Schaefer, Chairman
of the Board and State Director
of the Department of Family and
Children Services, told the group
that the State Budget Bureau has
approved the construction of six
such centers at the rate of three
each fiscal year for the next bi
ennium. The six Youth Develop
ment Centers, according to Mrs.
Schaefer, will be geographically
located over the state so as to
serve the best interests of all
Georgia children.
No sites have as yet been cho
sen for the State Centers but it
was emphasized that this will be
the responsibility of the entire
Children and Youth Board. The
sites will be chosen according to
child population, existing county
centers and proximity to main
transportation routes. The Board
will also give consideration to the
need for nearby services such as
medical and psychiatric facilities
that can be utilized on a consult
ing basis. Jim Parham, Director
of the Division for Children and
Youth, pointed out that the Cen
ters will have to be located near
centers of heavier population so
as to assure the availability of
these services and make possible
the attracting of qualified profes
sional staff.
TOBACCO SEED
* MIGHTY MITE
Mighty oaks springing from
tiny acorns have nothing on Geor
gia tobacco plants.
Tobacco seed are so tiny that
eight to ten ounces will produce
plants for 50 or more acres and
give harvest yields ranging up
ward to two tons per acre —a
growth of 100 tons of cured to
bacco in a few short months!
W. L. O’Steen, Pierce County
tobacco grower, sows eight to
eleven ounces of tobacco seed on
his 3,300 square yards of plant
beds. From this bed he pulls e
nough plants to set his own nine
acres and then sells some to his
neighbors to help pay for growing
the plants.
Robert L. Miles, special tobac
co agent for the Cooperative Ex
tension Service, says that Mr. O’-
Steen follows all recommended
practices in growing his tobacco
crop.

A PLUNGE
TO PLEASE YOU!
Through the years the trend in the price of
electricity has been downward
It’s delightful! The toboggan’s quick descent
of a snow-clad hill.
There is another plunge, too, that should
interest the budget-minded (and who isn’t
in these days of high prices?). It’s the drop
in the unit price you pay for electricity.
While other services were going up—up —•
up in price, electricity was coming down. Our
latest rate reduction, effective the first of
this year, will save our customers $2,700,000
in 1965 alone.
The average price per kilowatt-hour paid
by our residential customers is 22 per cent
less than the national average! Shouldn’t that
encourage you to live better... electrically ?

Moving the garden to a new lo
cation will help prevent or reduce
disease attacks, according to Dr.
Wiley N. Garrett, head of the Ex

department. He explained that
many organisms which are re
sponsible for diseases in the gar
den remain in the soil and on the
