Hospital Week
Is Proclaimed
Governor Carl Sanders has
proclaimed the week of May
9-15 National Hospital Week
in Georgia to recognize hospi
tals for their contributions to
the health and welfare of
Georgia people and for their
high standards of care. The
theme of this year’s observ
ance is “People — Heart of the
Hospital.”
This is the week set aside
each year to show the people
of the community the roles
their neighbors play in opera
ting a hospital. And it becomes
a bigger task each year. In
1946, a general hospital func
tioned with a ratio of 148
employees for every 100 pa
tients, but today, with added
medical services, more than
200 workers are needed to care
for every 100 patients, accord
ing to a hospital spokesman.
“People serving people is
basic to hospital service,”
says Lewis E. Bates, president
of the Georgia Hospital Asso
ciation, in commenting on the
annual event. Mr. Bates is ad
ministrator of Crisp County
Hospital at Cordele.
Hospitals resemble the cities
they serve, Mr. Bates said. The
room and board and medical
care provided hospital patients
must be backed up by a drug
store, a power plant, a laundry,
a library and a school in many
cases — all housed in this one
institution.
To maintain these services
and make them available to
every person in the state at
any hour of the day or night,
the 150 member hospitals of
the Georgia Hospital Associa
tion reouire an employee force
of nearly 30,000 people. Added
to this are over 10,000 volun
teers and more than 1,000 com
munity leaders who give their
time as hospital trustees. The
’arger hospitals have more
than two hundred job classifi
cations and offer fine career
opportunities to the young citi
zens of Georgia in nursing,
medical technology, pharmacy,
x-ray technology, medical rec
ord library science and nu
merous other professional oc
cupations.
National Hospital Week
gives people who are not seek
ing medical care the oppor
tunity to see a hospital at
work, Mr. Bates said. The ob
servance is designed to extend
pub’ic understanding of hos
pitals. “Even though science
and technology contribute re
markably to patient care, peo
ple continue to be the most
important element of the hos
pital,” Mr. Bates declared.

Eggs Perk Up
Spring Salads
A refreshing spring salad —
with eggs as the main ingre
dient — is a wholesome dish
to perk-up family menus.
For use during May — when
egg supplies will be abundant

the french dressing.

Add remaining ingredients and
mix well. Pour into a 1-quart
mold or 6 individual molds.
Chill until set and unmold on
too of crisp salad greens.

HONEY FLOW
Honey production in Georgia
last year is estimated at almost
6 million pounds by the State
Crop Reporting Service. This is
24 percent below 1963’s honey
flow. The state's 211.000 colonies
averaged 28 pounds of honey,
compared with 37 pounds the yea--
before. Unfavorable spring and
summer weather was primarily
responsible for the lower output
in '64.
Methodists
Plan Annual
Conferences
Delegates representing 360.-
300 Methodists in Georgia will
ho’d their annual conference
in June at Savannah and At
lanta.
The South Georgia Conferen
ce is scheduled for June 7-11
at Wesley Monumental Metho
dist Church in Savannah. The
North Georgia Annual Con
ference will meet June 21-25
at Glenn Memorial Methodist
Church in Atlanta.
The conferences are held
each year to consider business
and programs of 1.569 churches
and several boards and agen
cies. Church work to be dis
cussed will include missions:
evangelism, social concerns,
finances and various other
areas.
Both bodies will report in
creases in church membership
in the last 12 months. The
highest gain will be in the
North Georgia Conference
where the Atlanta metropoli
tan area has caused a step-un
in Methodist growth. Last year
both conferences reported
lagging Sunday school mem
bership, but this year is ex
pected to show this has im
proved.
Social concerns will again
be given close attention. Re
ports will ccme from the two
conference Boards of Christ
ian Social Concerns. Each year
the reports have stressed prob
lems ranging from sexual ex
ploitation in movies to race
relations. The boards have
made no announcement as to
the content of this year’s
reports. The group have, how
ever, worked strongly in the
areas of alcohol education,
race relations, and gambling
in the previous year.
Both conferences are expect
ed to give favorable finance
reports. In addition to local
church support, Methodist
contributions provide funds
for support of numerous na
tional and international pro
grams and projects such as I
hospitals, schools and colleges
and missions.
Delegates will be to’d th°t |
two retirement homes opened ।
at Americus and Atlanta in I
the last 18 months are having
good success. The homes,
valued at more than $7 mil
lion, provide retirement and I
nursing care for persons aged ।
65 and above. One is done in
Georgian Colonial amhitect”r^ i
while the other is ultra-mod
ern in design.

Two Methodist bishops will
be the conference preachers.
Bishop Nolan B. Harmon, re
tired, will preach each night
at the South Georgia Con
ference. Bishop Kenneth Cope
'and, leader of the Nebraska
Methodist Area, will preach at
North Georgia’s meeting.
The South Georgia meeting
is planned for Wesley Monu
mental Methodist Church, one
of the state’s most historic
churches. Methodists are be
ginning their 100 th year in
Georgia. Savannah was select
ed as the conference site this
year because it was the city
where John and Charles Wes
ley. founders of The Methodist
Church, first worked in A
merica.
North Georgians will meet
at Emory University’s campus
church, Glenn Memorial. Th°
church has become the peren

Bishop John Owen Smith
