Help Tobacco
Plant Growers
The production of an ample
upp’y of tobacco plants is no
problem for Linton and Felton
tarter, Ware County tobacco
’rowers, who live near Nich
olls.
They have grown plants
successfully for many years,
’eports John B. Preston, agro
lomist of the University of
Georgia Extension Service, but
in recent years they have
-hanged from use of conven
tional cheesecloth covers to
plastic covers.
This year, on 600 of their
1,800 square yards of plant bed,
they used a new type perforat
ed plastic which allows rain
fall to reach the plant bed soil,
the agronomist said.
He pointed out that the Car
ters do an excellent job in con
structing their plant beds,
"evere, windy weather during
*he growing season did not
damage the beds or plants.
Before the Carters seeded
f heir plant beds, they treated
♦he soil with a material to
-ontrol weeds and diseases
ind applied one pound of plant
bed fertilizer per square yard.
Then, with only three
ounces of seed of the Hicks
variety, they were able to seed
the entire 1,800 yards of bed
and produce an ample stand of
plants.
Despite effective and safe vac
cines, an estimated 20 million A
merican children under the age of
10 are unprotected against mea
sles, says Miss Lucile Higginbo

vice health department.

flameless electric
cooling/heating
Summertime. Wintertime. Makes no difference.
Not when springtime climate indoors is yours
in every season with a flameless electric cooling
and heating system.
It’s year-round clean. In homes cooled and
heated electrically, there are no grimy, sooty
by-products of combustion. Redecorating costs
are cut drastically.
Savings begin with construction. No costly
vents, chimneys or flues to install. Also, an elec
tric heating and cooling system may qualify you
for SIBO toward wiring or rewiring your home.
What’s more, there is our special low total
electric rate. And with our budget billing, your
electric bill is the same amount every month.
So, ignore the seasons and enjoy perennial
spring. It’s thermostat-near!
GEORGIA POWER COMPANY
PRICE SITUATION
IS ENCOURAGING
TO POULT~YM3N
There was a note of opti
mism this week among Geor
gia’s poultry producers. Al
though prices they receive for
eggs and broilers will con
tinue under some pressure,
prices will not be as low as
earlier expected.
Paul C. Bunce, Extension
market infqrmation and out
look specialist at the Univer
sity of Georgia, gave these
reasons for the brighter pic
ture:
Recent developments in the
layer-egg portion of the in
dustry, he said, indicate sup
plies for the remainder of 1965
will fall short of levels pre
dicted at the beginning of the
year. Selling of hens during
the first quarter has run far
ahead of a year ago. Total
hen numbers are currently a
bout one percent below April,
1964, figures.
Mr. Bunce pointed out, how
ever, that an increase in rate
of lay may offset the reduct
ion in hens. If this is the case,
egg supplies will about equal
But eggs set recently for
replacements are running a
bout 20 percent below year
earlier levels. “This indicate 0
that egg supplies will not far
exceed demand for the rest of
this year and early 1966,” Mr
Bunce stated. “For the rest o f
this year, prices should be at
about the 1964 level.”
He expressed doubt th -3 *
e CT g prices will reach the high
of last August (37.2 c ner
dozen) but added that they
should be much better than
during the first four months
of this year.
While the broiler situation
is not as encouraging, there is
one bright spot, at least tem
porarily. Mr. Bunce said sup
p’ies in recent months have
been running much above
year earlier levels. A, short
period this spring or summer
may see supplies not so high:
but they will pick up again
later in the year.
The market information and
outlook specialist explained
that hatchery supply flocks
will reduce the number of
hens for a short period. The
number of hens, however, will
be up for fall supplies and in
to early next year. “This
means,” Mr. Bunce stated,
“that broiler prices will be
low for the fall and early next
year after a short period of
reasonably good prices this
summer.”
He added that competition
frcm pork will be reduced this
year, and this will tend to lend
strength to broiler prices.
Garden Walk
At Harrison
Home Sunday
The annual garden walk at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Har
rison in Pierce County will be
held this Sunday afternoon, May
23, from 2:00 until 7:00 P. M.
Visitors are invited to visit the
flower gradens at the Harrison
home and see the display of day
lilies now in full bloom, many 0
which are Mrs. Harrison’s own
hybrid blooms.
The first process by which
cotton seed oil could be made
from the previously discard
ed cotton seed was discovered
by Launcelot Johnstone, a
Georgian.
Net income per farm in Georgia
last year amounted to $2,915. This
is $2 less per farm than in 1933.
according to Paul C. Bunce, Ex
tension market information and
outlook specialist at the Uni
versity of Georgia.
