TOO MUCH NITROGEN Excessive nitrogen can have adverse effects on tomato plants, according to Horticulturist J. M. Barber of the University of Geor gia Extension Service. Too much nitrogen, he says, will result in rank vine growth and delay ma turity of the tomatoes. Hog Cholera Strikes Costly Blow in State According to Agriculture Com missioner Phil Campbell, hog cholera season has struck a hard and costly blow to Georgia hog farmers in recent weeks. He states that the warm months of May, June, July and August cause an increase in outbreaks of hog cholera, and this year the hog cholera season started early and hard. “It is up to the hog farmers of Georgia to stop these outbreaks now and cut hog cholera season short.” Georgia has had excellent success during the last few years in holding down the incidence, but without the complete cooperation of hog owners, cholera will again became a serious problem in Georgia. Recent outbreaks in the Bul loch and Coffee county areaG have been extremely heavy and costly. This is due primarily to the thoughtless acts of four or five farmers who — after sus pecting cholera in their herds — have taken them to market where many other herds were exposed and infested. In an effort to bring these outbreaks under control, pse of modified live virus is being permitted throughout the state effective immediately. Cholera is a highly contagious disease. The cholera virus can live in the air. It can live on a truck or in a sales barn for days. Therefore, farmers must keep their sick hogs out of the stock yards. Cholera must be reported immediately. The state will pay market value for cholera deaths when reported. Check your hogs now. Vaccinate them now. If you suspect any one of your herd has symptoms of cholera — report it immediately to your County Agent. Veteri narian, or the Georgia Depart ment of Agriculture. They’ll be glad to give you assistance. WATER SAFETY Over 6,000 persons drown in the United States every year. The death rate from drowning is high est among the teens, reports Miss Lucile Higginbotham of the Cooperative Extension Service. And the rate for teen boys, she says, is about 15 times the rate for teen girls. The main reason is that boys tend to take more chances, often to impress others with their ability to swim. L. Pope, social security district manager in Waycross. Many employers will not hire a student unless he already has a social security card. Students who do get jobs should show the card to the employer so that the name and number may be copied correctly. This is important be cause social security tax money must be credited to the correct record. Duplicate cards will be issued to students who have had cards but have lost them.
