Governor Salutes Helen Keller
On Her 85th Birthday Sunday
To honor Helen Keller’s 85th
birthday Governor Carl E.
Sanders has proclaimed Sun
day, June 27 as Helen Keller
Day throughout Georgia, join
ing many other states across
the country in saluting Miss
Keller on this occasion. A spe
cial resolution has also been
passed by the U. S. Senate to
observe the occasion.
Miss Keller is celebrating
her birthday Sunday at the
home, Arcan Ridge, Connecti
cut, where congratulatory
messages are pouring in from
around the world. Through her
books, lectures, and trips, and
William Gibson’s dramatiza
tion of her triumph over both
blindness and deafness in “The
Miracle Worker,” she has in
spired untold millions in every
comer of the globe.
Last year President Johnson
awarded her the Medal of
Freedom, the nation’s highest
civil award. At that time the
President stated that Miss
Keller is “an example of
courage to all mankind.”
In his proclamation Gover
nor Sanders highlighted the
work she has done to help
others. “She has tirelessly de
voted herself to the improve
ment of conditions for the phy
sically handicapped through
out the world,” the Governor
said. “As Counselor to the A
merican Foundation for the
Blind, she has guided pro
grams to improve the economic
and social opportunities of
blind and deaf-blind persons
in the State of Georgia and
throughout the United States.”
In addition to her efforts in
this country, Miss Keller has
worked to better conditions
among the blind in the under
developed and emerging coun
tries of the world. She was
active in the American Foun
dation for Overseas Blind from
its establishment in 1915, and
has made many survey and lec
ture trips through five conti
nents on behalf of'this organi
zation.
In ceremonies at United
Nations headquarters in May
1959, the Helen Keller World
Crusade for the Blind was
launched to honor Miss Keller

Foundation for Overseas Blind.
“Through the Helen Keller
World Crusade,” the Governor
pointed out, “she has inspired
programs for the education
and rehabilitation of blind
persons around the globe.”
Miss Keller has been the
recipient of countless awards
of great distinction, among
them the French Legion of
Honor, the Brazilian Order of
the Southern Cross, the Japa
nese Sacred Treasure, the
Philippines Golden Heart and
the Lebanese Gold Medal of
Merit. She has also been given
the Americas Award for Inter-
American Unity, the Gold
Medal Award from the Nat
ional Institute of Social Scien
ce, the National Humanitarian
Award from the Variety Clubs
International, and many other
tokens of esteem.
Her books, including “The
Story of My Life” and “Tea
cher, Anne Sullivan Macy,”
have been translated and read
in many languages. “The Story
of My Life,” in particular, has
had a wide distribution. In
1954, fifty years after its first
publication as a book, trans
lations had been made in more
than fifty languages, including
such strange and unusual ones
as Marathi, Pushtu, Tagalog
and Urdu.
A few years before his death
Mark Twain said, “The two
most interesting characters of
the nineteenth century are
Napolean and Helen Keller.”
Now on her 85th birthday, Miss
Keller’s achievements attest to
the fact that she is also one of
the towering figures of the
twentieth century.
WHY DOLOMITIC?
When available at comparable
prices, dolomitic lime is preferred
over calcitic lime for soils used
for vegetable production. Explain
ing why, Extension Service Hor
ticulturist F. B. Cates said dolo
mitic lime supplies both magne
sium and calcium, both of which
are vitally needed by vegetables.

FULL BLOOM
When fruit trees are in full
bloom, they should not be sprayed
with an insecticide. Explaining
why, Horticulturist C. D. Spivey
of the Extension Service said this
is the time when bees are busy
pollinating the plants. Honey bees
are the fruit grower’s best friends
in getting the important pollina

There’s a much easier way to
cool it, man.
Let a flameless electric heat pump keep
your home comfortable year-round.
No lad with a pad ever had it so glad — until
the electric heat pump made the scene.
This efficient system needs only electricity
and air to operate. Replaces summer heat
with a frosty-morning tingle. Lets you bask
in sunshine warmth on raw winter days.
Set — and forget — the thermostat. Your
heat pump automatically reverses cycle, from
heating to cooling, as needed. You’ll find it
creates no combustion by-products. Home
interiors stay clean.
Operates economically because of our spe
cial low rate for total-electric customers. And
budget billing means your electric bill is the
same amount every month.
So, don’t sit there in that three-dimensional
square. Step up to the joy of electric living.
It’s the master plan, man!
