An English tourist who was
telling an Irish peasant about
the immense size of the British
Empire said,
Englishman — Well, Pat, and
do you know that the sun
never sets on the King’s do
minion?
Pat — No, your honor.
Englishman — Well, such is
the case. But do you know the
reason why.

The 58,000-added Firecracker 400
at Daytona International Speed
way on Sunday, July 4, already
has 40 qualified and accepted en
tries.
With the race three full weeks
away Speedway officials are con
fident that close to 60 of the
country’s top late model racing
stock cars will be on hand to bat
tle in the qualifying trials for
one of the 40 starting positions.
The drivers represent 12 states,
ranging from Texas, (A. J. Foyt)
to lowa (Dick Hutcherson) to
Indiana (Earl Balmer) and Flori
da (Marvin Panch).
All of Detroit’s top makes will
go to the line in the 160 lap run
over the Speedway’s 2.5-mile as

hot Jim Paschal one, and two

“... a new American sports
car that will be eminently
acceptable at rallies but
that can, in the American
manner, double at church
picnics.”
These cars, plus Plymouth,
Mercury and Dodges, will challen
ge Ford’s 1965 supermacy on the
super-speedways. Ford will not be
easily ousted, however, for its
drivers include the charging Foyt,
who won the Firecracker last
year in record speed, Freddie
Lorenzen, Marvin Panch, Junior
Johnson, Dick Hutcherson, Bobby
Johns and others.
The Firecracker could very well
play a deciding role in the battle
between Hutchinson and Ned
Jarrett for the Grand National
drivers’ championship. These two
have been neck-to-neck all year,
and victory in the Firecracker
carries a whopping number of
points.
Practice for the Firecracker
starts on June 29, with the first
qualifying trials on Wednesday,
June 30. The two fastest cars on
that day will earn the post posi
tions for the Firecracker. Time
trials will continue through Satur
day.
The Firecracker is the high
light of the annual Daytona Beach
area Independence Day festivi
ties, known the country over for
their quality and variety.

NEW PUBLICATION
DISCUSSES GEORGIA
DAYLILY CULTURE
Daylilies, one of the most satis
factory flowering plants for Geor
gia gardens, is the subject of a
new publication just released by
the University of Georgia’s Co
operative Extension Service.
Copies are available for coun
ty agents and home demonstra
tion agents.
Entitled “Daylily Culture,” the
colorful, illustrated leaflet is a
complete cultural guide for Geor
gia gardners who want to grow
this flowering plant. It was pre
pared by Gerald E. Smith, Ex
tension horticulturist.
Mr. Smith points out that few
plants give so much color for so
little effort as the daylily. He says
they will grow a wide range of
conditions, but adds that they will
not thrive on neglect.
“Daylily Culture” includes sec
tions on plant location, soil re
quirements, planting, mulching,
watering, fertilizing, pest control,
and plant propagation.
NEW PULPMILLS
Twenty-one new pulpmills have
been announced for the South
during the past several months.
Cooperative Extension Service
foresters say no new’ mills have
been announced for Georgia, but
several of the state’s 13 pulpmills
have expansion plans underway.
FHA Helps Provide
Safe Water Supplies
For Rural Residents
Some 5,000 farmers and ru
ral residents in Georgia have
found that they do not have to
rely on troublesome wells and
unsafe water supplies. “The
Farmers Home Administration
is helping these people obtain
modern, central water systems
that provide safe, treated wat
er at reasonable cost,” S. L.
VanLandingham, State Direc
tor, reports.
During the past two years
loans have been made to the
towns of Sumner, Bostwick,
Mitchell, Culloden, Siloam,
Danville, Allentown, Tarry
town, Stillmore, Summertown,
Cecil, Surrency, Pulaski and
Mineral Bluff. Loans have also
been made to Dade County and
a nonprofit group in a rural
community in Walker County.
When completed, these sys
tems will serve a total of 1752
customers, including several
hundred farmers and a num
ber of small industries. Loans
for eight more small towns are
now being processed.
Mr. VanLandingham points
out that these water systems
afford safe, treated water and
the convenience of central
distribution.
“One of the most important
benefits,” says Mr. VanLand
ingham, “is that a water sys
tem is the first step in making
small towns and rural com
munities attractive places to
live. It encourages population
growth, the building of new
homes, and is necessary if
these communities are to get
small industries. For example,
an important industry will be
locate^in Walker County as a
direct result of the construc
tion of a water system in that
county with a FHA loan.
Loans may be made to small
towns and unincorporated,
thickly settled rural areas
where adequate credit is not
available. The loans are made
by banks, insurance companies
and other private lenders and
are insured by the Farmers
Home Administration. They
are repayable over long terms
at low rates of interest.
The FHA supplies supervi
sion and assistance to town
officials and local leaders in
making applications, obtaining
engineering service, cost esti
mates, designing, financing and
building the system.
Seth M. Kellam, County
FHA Supervisor who services
Brantley, Charlton, Pierce,
Ware Counties said applicants
desiring information on loan
assistance for providing central
water systems should contact
his office.
