Questions and Answers
on the Bible
BY MRS. GLADYS C. JOHNSON
WHAT IS THE TITHE?
Webster gives the definition
as — one tenth of the annual
produce of one’s land, etc., or
the equivalent in money, paid
as a tax to support the church
or the clergy.
The principle of the tithe
goes back into the pages of
antiquity. God taught even
Adam and Eve that at least
one tree from all that were in
the garden was to be His a
lone — the tree of the know
ledge of good and evil.
Clay tablets have been found
in the ruins of ancient cities
showing that many of the na
tions of the earth were paying
tithes to their gods even in the
days of Abraham. Such teach
ing must have come down
through the godly line of Seth,
Enoch, Noah and Abraham.
Four hundred years after
Abraham paid his tithes to
Melchizedek, we find Moses re
affirming the principle of the
tithe for the maintenance of
the Temple and the priest
hood of the Jewish people.
The Mosiac law was — that
a tenth of all produce, flocks
and cattle were declared sac
red to God. This was, in a
sense, the rent which man was
to pay for the use of the land
which belonged only to God.
The Pharisees in the time of
Christ added to the Mosaic law
and included many other
things even to the smallest of
kitchen herbs such as mint
and cummin. We find Christ
rebuking the Pharisees con
cerning the fact that they
were so scrupulous about the
matter of the tithe but neg
lected the things of the spirit.
Malachi 3:10 gives this ad
monition, “Bring ye all the
tithes into the storehouse (the
temple or church) that there
may be meat in mine house.”
The Israelites were to bring
their tithes to the Levites, the
priests of the temple. The
Levities in turn were to tithe
of that which had been
brought, None were exempt.
The law of the tithe has
never been set aside and
Christians today are missing
a great blessing if they do not
obey Christ’s teaching in the
matter of the stewardship of
money.
Many ministers and Christ
ian workers today are hesitant
about presenting the tithing
program as given by God be
cause it points up the sin we
are afraid to mention — the
sin of covetousness.
However, we must relegate
to the scrap heap our pagan
way of thinking that what we
have belongs to us by right of
possession and realize that
“the earth is the Lord’s and
the fullness thereof, the world

We are merely stewards,
caretakers as it were, of that
which God has loaned to us.
All that He asks is one tenth
of that which is His own. In

Milk Prices to
Rise One Cent
Atlanta — Georgia retail milk
prices will be returned to the old
cost of 28 cents a quart on July 1,
the Georgia Milk Commission has
announced.
The price had dropped to 27
cents during May and June in
accordance with an economic ba
rometer formula which is used
to compute the state’s milk price
every two months. During the
first four months of 1965 the cost
was 28 cents.
Commission Chairman Cliff
Ward predicts still more changes.
“Prices may go up; they may go
down. It looks like the price is
going to do a lot of fluctuating in
keeping in step with the general
economy of the nation,” he ex
plained. However, the chairman
said he expects the fluctuation to
remain in the present price range.
The penny-a-quart change will
be statewide. It will apply to all
forms of liquid milk. Prices of
other sized containers will be ad
justed accordingly.
Only four counties, all near
Chattanooga, Tennessee, will
have outlets that sell milk for less
than 28 cents a quart. Fannin,
Dade, Catoosa, and Walker Coun
ty distributors will sell milk for
27 cents to meet competition from
across the state line. These dis
tributors have been selling quarts
for 26 cents.
The milk cost formula was a
dopted by the Commission in 1955.
It is worked out by agricultural
economists at the Griffin Experi
ment Station. Whenever it indi
cates a price change should be
made, the change is automatic.
Factors fed into the formula in
clude a wide range of economic
indexes in order to get an accur
ate and up-to-date picture of milk
production costs.
When the formula was adopted
ten years ago milk cost 25 cents.
It has varied between 25 and 28
cents since.

Again Winner
Atlantic City, N. J. — The
Georgia Power Company’s ad
vertising for 1964 has been
named by the Public Utilities
Advertising Association as the
third best complete advertis
ing program for the year. An
nouncement of the award in
the international competition
was made Thursday, June 17,
at the association’s annual con

The entry was based on the
company’s promotion of the
total-electric concept for
homes, businesses and indust
ries. Advertisments in weekly
and daily newspapers through
out Georgia were used in the
promotion.
Nearly 2,500 entries were re
ceived in the PU.AA contest,
oldest continuous advertising
competition in the world. In
vestor-owned electric, water
and gas utilities in nearly all
50 states and several foreign
countries compete.
For the past three years,
Georgia Power has ranked a
mong the top three in the cate
gory of best complete advertis
ing programs, placing first in
1964.
