Used Tires Bring
Unwelcome Guest
Back to Salvador
The malaria-carrying Aedes
aegypti misquito has returned to
El Salvador, apparently by means
of an imported shipment of used
tires.
A specimen of the mosquito
was recently found in San Salva
dor, and foci of reinfestation sub
sequently were discovered in the
city. Breeding larvae were pre
sent in tires in 6 of the 14 infest
ed premises. Tires collecting rain
water furnish an ideal breeding
place for Aedes aegypti.
According to the Pan American
Sanitary Bureau, the species
was eradicated in El Salvador in
1957 and periodic inspections for
reinfestation have been negative
unit now. (From Modern Medi
cine, Sept. 27, 1965)
