HIGH GERMINATION
KEY TO SUCCESS
OF SEED PROGRAM
Brantley County’s Bonus Seed
Program calls for seed of high
germination at least 90 percent,
on such crops as small grain and
corn, County Agent George A.
Loyd pointed out this week.
To germinate, he said, a seed
uses energy. Sometimes half the
energy in the seed goes into
germination.
Even seed that germinate suf
ficiently high in the laboratory
may not perform too well in the
soil, the county agent continued.
This is due to lowered vitality of
the seed as well as adverse soil
conditions.
Mutilated and broken seed
should be avoided, Mr. Loyd said.
The germination may be lower
and there will also be a higher
seedling mortality.
Breaks in the seed coat injure
germination. Broken or cracked
seed mold more than whole seed.
Mechanical injury due to broken
seed coats and splitting frequent
ly occur in some seed.
The Bonus Seed Program stres
ses the importance of planting
seed that are whole and have
been properly harvested and stor
ed. “This is a good form of crop
insurance, Mr. Loyd stated.
