Questions and Answers
on the Bible
BY MRS. GLADYS C. JOHNSON
Ara the Six Days of Creation
limited to a 24 hour day or are
they periods of time marked off
by a beginning and an end?
This is a question which has
been discussed pro and con by
Bible scholars for many years.
The most frequently used argu
ment against the possibility of the
days being but 24 hours is that
we must account in some way for
those long geologic ages which
science tells us must be consid
ered.
Let us think about this for a mo
ment. If a day of creation means
an age or a long geologic period
of time what happens to the eve
ning and morning of each day?
After each act of creation the
Scripture says, “and the evening
and the morning were the first
second-third-fourth-fifth and sixth
days.”
This would mean that each geo
logic age would be one long per
iod of light and another long
period of darkness. What would
happen to the plants and trees
which were brought forth in the
third day — or period of time —
when the evening of the fourth
day began? All vegetation would
have had to endure an extended
space of time in complete dark
ness which, without the benefit of
the sun’s rays, would have com
pletely destroyed the whole vege
table creation. Yet it survived and
was given as food for the animals
which were created on the sixth
day.
As you read the story of crea
tion substitute the word “age” or
“period” for that of “day” and
you can see that the entire mean
ing would be distorted.
This does not mean that the
word day is not used in the Bible
to denote long periods of time
such as the “day of the Lord”
and others but whenever a numer
al or figure is connected with the
word it is limited to the time
which it takes the world to make
one revolution upon its axis.
Now turn to Exodus 20:11 and
you will find that God says, “For
in six days the Lord made heaven
and earth, the sea, and all that
in them is, and rested the seventh
day; wherefore the Lord blessed
the sabbeth day and hallowed it.”
God in this 20th chapter of Exo
dus is giving to the children of
Israel the Ten Commandments
and has just told them that “Six
days shalt thou labour, and do
all thy work, but the seventh day
is the sabbath of the Lord thy
God; in it thou shalt not do any
work ...”
God would not have used six
days of 24 hours each in his
commandment to the Israelites
and then emphasized it by the
use of a day of undertermined
length. No, our God is consistent
in all that He says and does.
At the time of Moses and the
giving of this commandment, the
world as we know it had been in
existence some 2500 years —
plenty of time for the patriarchs
to have made up their minds con
cerning the Creation story of
Genesis. According to this 11th
verse they understood that the
day and night of Genesis was of
24 hour duration. I agree with
them.
However, the Bible would still
not be contradicting itself if it
were later discovered that those
days were of a longer span of
time. Our God is a great God and
cannot be limited in any way.
The surest and best way of un
derstanding the Bible is just tc
accept its plain statements as
‘.ruth. We place ourselves in grave
ianger when we attempt to take
away or add to the Word of God.
IS THERE A HELL?
In answering all questions we
accept what the Scriptures SAY
as proof of statements made.
The Bible gives a great amount
of space to a description of the
punishment of the wicked dead
and the place to which they will
be sent after death. We would
have to delete from our Bible
hundreds of verses if we agreed
that there w'as no such place as
Hell.
For instance —
“The wicked shall be turned
into hell, and all the nations that
forget God.” Psalms 9:17.
“So shall it be at the end of

the world; the angels shall come
forth, and sever the wicked from
among the just. And shall cast
them into the furnace of fire;
there shall be wailing and gnash
ing of teeth.” Matthew 13:41, 42.
“To him was given the key of
the bottomless pit. And he open
ed the bottomless pit; and there
arose a smoke out of the pit, as
the smoke of a great furnace; and
the sun and the air were darken
ed by reason of the smoke of the
pit.” Revelation 9:1, 2.
“Whosoever was not found writ
ten in the book of life was cast
into the lake of fire.” Revelation
20:15.
From these verses we see that
hell is described in many ways
but always it is spoken of as a
place.
“Then shall he say also unto
them on the left hand, Depart
from me, ye cursed, into everlast
ing fire, prepared for the devil
and his angels.” Matthew 25:41.
I have heard the statement
made that a loving God would
never send anyone to a place of
eternal torment. God does NOT
send anyone there. This place was
prepared for the devil and his
angels — not for individuals who
were created in the likeness and
image of God Himself.
Man sends himself to Hell in
spite of all that God has done to
keep him from going there. Christ
has already paid the price of re
demption and if man insists on
refusing that gift then he goes
to hell by trampling over the
dead body of the Lord Jesus
Christ.
Men and women do not even
have to do anything to go to Hell.
All they need do is to neglect
being saved.
Yet man still says, “I can’t be
lieve it.”
For hundreds of years man
kind believed that the world was
flat. Nothing would make them
change their mind. Then one
day — one who believed other
wise — set out to see for himselft.
He discovered that all these years
people had been in error — the
world was actually round. Just
because they had said the world
was flat did not necessarily make
it so.
It made no difference that those
who believed in a flat world
were sincere in their belief. They
were just as wrong as could be
and if their salvation had depend-

ed upon that belief they would
have been lost.
So it really doesn’t matter
whether we believe there is no
Hell or whether we believe that

God will never send anyone
there. The Bible says otherwise
and if we accept the truth of the
Scripture in other things then
there must certainly be a Hell.
