Are Announced
Twelve South Georgians who
will be responsible for getting
Medicare facts to the eligible el
derly in the 9-county area of Sash
Pine Area Planning and Develop
ment Commission are busy with
organizational work this week.
James B. Harley, Sr., Director
of “Operation Medicare Alert”
said the major effort of reaching
the eligible begins next Monday.
The 12 have until March 31 to get
the Social Security Amendments
of 1965 facts to the estimated 8,-
000 citizens in the 9-county area.
Harley announced Tuesday the
team captains who will head the
three divisions of the Slash Pine
area.
M. R. Little of Waycross, form
er State Rehabilitation Official, is
team captain for Atkinson, Clinch
and Ware Counties.
Mrs. Son Thomas of Patterson,
former businesswoman, is team
captain for Brantley, Charlton,
and Pierce. J. E. Mathis, Jr., of
Fitzgerald, retired railroad offi
cial, is team captain for Bacon,
Ben Hill, and Coffee Counties.
Three aids have been named to
serve with each team captain.
Working with Mr. Little will be
Mrs. C. E. Johns of Homerville,
Mrs. Estelle Newsom of Pearson,
and Willie R. Peterson of Way
cross.
Assisting Mrs. Thomas will be
T. E. Rauierson of Nahunta, Mrs.
J. 0. Hannaford of Folkston, and
Leo A. Marshall, Sr., of Black
shear. Aides working with Mr.
Mathis will be Mrs. Linnie Dor
miney of Douglas, Mrs. P. H.
Rimes of Alma, and Lonnie Dar
den of Douglas.
Harley said 30 or more volun
teers will*be needed to assist in
locating and informing the eligible
of planned meetings which will be
held in every community. Social
Security officials will be on hand
to explain the law and sign up

Medicare’s hospitalization and
medical services benefits.
Some Record
Snowfalls
When you have occasion to
gaze glumly at falling snow and
brood about galoshes, snow
shovels, and aching backs, re
member that it could be worse.
Much worse. For instance,
back in 1921, 76 inches of snow
fell at Silver Lake, Colo., in just
24 hours. And at Tahoe, Calif.,
108 inches of snow came down be
tween January 12 and 15, 1952.
But no matter where you live,
there are few spots in the United
States which never get snow. For
instance, snow fell as far south
as Lakeland, Fla., near St. Pet
ersburg, in January, 1958.

BREAST CANCER DEATHS
Aproximately 400 Georgians will
die of breast cancer in 1965. The
American Cancer Society says
that many of them could have
been saved, if they had practiced
breast self-examination and had
seen their doctor as soou as a
lump or irregularity appeared.
