Rural
Electrification
When the Congress drafted
the REA Act, it did not limit the
program to the electrification of
farms. The Rural Areas were
to be electrified. A rural elec-
trie system cannot extend ser
vice into any town over 1,500
. . . where it does serve such
a town, this is due to growth
in population over the interven-
ing years . . .
Cities and towns are expand-
ing as the population increases,
and many city people are at
tracted to the nearby country.
When rural residents and rural
businesses build within our ser
vice area we have a right, as
well as an obligation to serve
them. •
Working always for progress,
existing solely for service, co
operating in community growth,
the Member-Owned Rural Elec
trics are helping insure the full
development of Rural America.

36 TO PARTICIPATE THIS SUMMER
Youth Corps Project in
Brantley to Be Enlarged
The number of high school
youths participating in Brantley
County’s Neighborhood Youth
Corps project will be increased
from 30 to 36 this summer.
The increase was announced
this week by Mershon Aspinwall
Jr., NYC project director for
Slash Pine Area Planning and
Development Commission, the
sponsoring organization. The sum
mer project which received fede
ral approval last week calls for a
federal expenditure of $166,123
over a 13-week period beginning
June 1.
The increase in Brantley and
eight other Slash Pine area coun
ties is based on a 20 percent in
crease over the present number
and on a population basis.
The summer project is a supple
ment to the present contract. The
number of enrollees increases
from 300 to 400 and the working
hours from eight to 24. Over half
of the student work sites will be
located in the community. The
balance will be on school cam
puses.
Recruitment of additional en
rollers will be carried out through
the schools, Aspinwall said. He
pointed out that a majority of
the summer enrollees will come
from families whose annual in
come is under $3,000. The income
scale is based on non-farm and
farm incomes and the number of

The NYC project got underway
in Brantley County last Nov. 15.
Through March 31 the county’s
30 students had earned $4,625.72
while receiving work-training ex
periences at campus work sites.
Supt. Mrs. Mable Moody has
praised the project and given it
strong support. She has worked
closely with Slash Pine officials
in planning for the summer.
The Brantley County Board of
Education holds a subcontract
with Slash Pine. Nationally the
project is under the direction of
the U. S. Department of Labor.
NYC came into being when Con
gress passed the Economic Op
portunity Act of 1964.

Man Visiting in
Pierce Bitten
By Rabid Coon
A warning has been issued to
Pierce County residents of the
Offerman area, as well as to all
persons throughout South Georgia,
to use caution against animals
who may have rabies.
The warning was issued after
a Waycross man, Jesse Lee
Knowles, was bitten by a rabid
coon in Pierce County on Mon
day while visiting his brother,
Vernon Knowles.
Knowles was bitten in the left
arm when dogs caught the ani
mal and was attacked when he
attempted to place the coon un
der a tub.
He was put under treatment of
a Waycross physician, when the
head was carried to the Regional
Health Office laboratory and exa
mination of the animal showed
positive for rabies.

It’s Great to Lead the Band!
People everywhere are using more electricity,
and Georgians are helping to set the pace!
You see, our average residential customer
was using more electricity back in 1963 than
the average American home uses today.
You know that the prices of nearly all
goods and services have been going up —up
— up. But not electricity.
Through the years the unit price of elec
tricity has been coming down. And you’re
20 years ahead of the nation in the low price
you pay. That’s right. Back in 1946 your
average price per kilowatt-hour was less
than the nation’s average price today.
Right now you’re paying a whopping 24
per cent less. So, don’t you agree that your
electric service is an outstanding value — the
biggest bargain in your family budget, by far ?

HARD TO CLEAN
A sprayer that has been used
to apply 2, 4-D weed killer is
extremely hard to clean. For this
reason, Extension agronomists at
the University of Georgia recom
mend that sprayers used to apply
this material not be used to ap
ply other herbicides and insecti
cides on cotton and other sensitive
crops.
